Vanderburg, Brock named to North all-star squad By BARRY BURLESON Editor A pair of Marshall Academy Patriots will play one more high school baseball game. Seniors
Joey Brock and Josh Vanderburg were selected to the Mississippi
Association of Independent Schools North AA-AAA all-star squad. “They’re
both by far the best leaders I’ve ever had on a team,” said Bart
Jenkins, head coach of the Patriots. “They’re two extremely
hard-working kids. I’m very, very proud of them.” The
AA-AAA all-star game between the North and the South will be played
Friday, May 27, at 2 p.m. at Smith-Wills Stadium in Jackson. The Class
A all-star contest will follow at 5 p.m. The two helped lead Marshall to the Class AA semi-finals this season and a 25-12 record. Brock, a right-handed pitcher, was 8-2 on the mound with a 1.15 earned run average. He hit .285 and stole 21 bases in 23 tries. Vanderburg, a catcher, hit .327 with three home runs and 28 RBIs. He was a perfect, 19 of 19, in swiping bases. “Both
of them performed well for us down the stretch,” Coach Jenkins said.
“They provided a solid foundation. They produced – verbally and by
example.” All-star players will report to Jackson next Wednesday, May 25, for practice. The North AA-AAA squad will be led by head coach Sim Shanks of Carroll Academy and assistant Neil Henry of Starkville Academy.
