Hayes’ Hawks beat Charleston by eight and 28 By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Holly Springs High School Hawks upped their district record to 4-1 last week with a pair of wins over the same school. The Hawks beat Charleston by eight on the road Tuesday night, Jan. 4, and then defeated the Tigers by 28 at home Friday evening. The Lady Hawks remained winless in district play with two losses to Charleston. The Holly High boys let a big lead slip away in the game at Charleston but snatched a 48-40 victory. Coach Naylond Hayes’ squad went up 21-3 early. The Tigers cut it to two at one point in the contest. “We
played good, solid defense in the first half, and then I believe we got
a little winded in the second half,” Hayes said. “Charleston has a good
team.” The Hawks hit nine of 22 from beyond the three-point line and three of 10 from the free-throw stripe. “We shot better threes than free throws,” he said. “We’re trying to get it together but we’re not there yet.” Johnathan Bownes led Holly Springs with 12 points. David Bridges added nine. The Holly High Lady Hawks fell 47-36 at Charleston Tuesday of last week. Friday night The Hawks delighted their home fans with a 66-38 rout of Charleston. Bownes and Kendrick Pool were the top guns for Holly High. Bownes scored 18 and Pool 15. The Holly High girls dropped the first game Friday 72-37. No Lady Hawks scored in double digits. The
Holly Springs girls (1-18) and the boys (13-6) continue Region 3-3A
play in the next few weeks. They were scheduled to host Independence
Tuesday night. They go to East Side Friday and then host Palmer next
