Caldwell-Tagert
appear headed to runoff for transportation commissioner John Caldwell and Mike Tagert are advancing to a Tuesday, Feb. 1, runoff for Northern District transportation commissioner. Unofficial totals from Tuesday’s special election, with 627 of 628 precincts reporting, showed Caldwell leading the seven-man field with 10,660 votes (21 percent). Tagert had 10,373 votes (21 percent). Caldwell, of Nesbit, is transportation director for the DeSoto County School District. Tagert, of Starkville, is president of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway Council. The special election was called by the governor to fill the vacancy created with the death of commissioner Bill Minor of Holly Springs on November 1. The district covers 33 counties. Turnout for the special election was extremely low district-wide – hampered by snow, ice and cold weather. Ray Minor, Bill Minor’s brother, carried Marshall County. Only 2,016 people voted in Marshall. Minor received 1,235 votes in his home county or 61 percent. Other unofficial districtwide totals, with a precinct in Leflore County not included, were Warner McBride 9,983 (20 percent), Dennis Grisham 8,494 (17 percent), Joey Hood 6,302 (12 percent), Ray Minor 3,857 (8 percent) and Larry Lee 748 (1 percent). The winner of the February 1 runoff between Caldwell and Tagert will serve nearly the final year of a four-year term. The transportation commissioner position will be up for re-election in the regular round of statewide voting this year. |
