SportsReportMA Patriots win North State By BARRY BURLESON
For the first time since the mid-1990s, the Marshall Academy boys are North State track champions. The Patriots, battling the wind and rain, took the top prize April 20 at Washington School in Greenville. They totaled 55 points and finished ahead of Manchester (49) and Canton (43). Eleven schools participated. Lady Cards beat West Union Tuesday afternoon of last week the West Union Lady Eagles came to Potts Camp for the final division of the season for both teams. Potts Camp was entering this game with one division loss and West Union was undefeated in division games. Marshall meets Hillcrest By BARRY BURLESON The Marshall Academy Patriots enter the Class AA State Baseball Playoffs this week. The Patriots, who received a bye in the first round, will face Hillcrest Christian in a best two-of-three series. The Cougars eliminated Manchester Academy last week. Potts Camp girls, boys take first in division By BARRY BURLESON Potts Camp took the top prizes in both girls and boys competition at the Division 2-1A Track Meet last week. H.W. Cardinals down Lions By BARRY BURLESON The Potts Camp baseball team closed its season April 19 with an 8-1 win over county rival H.W. Byers on “Senior Night.” Kudzu 5K is May 6 The annual Killer Kudzu 5K is set for Friday, May 6, in downtown Holly Springs. The run, which benefits the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life, starts at 7 p.m. The Killer Kudzu winds through historic Holly Springs. The challenging course begins downtown on the courtsquare and takes runners past sweeping antebellum homes, towering native woods, graveyards dating back two centuries, and, of course, Kudzu. Registration is available online at americanpac.com. Ray second in 100 dash Wesleyann Ray, an eighth grader at Marshall Academy, finished second in the 100 meter dash at the District 1-AA Varsity District Track Meet April 16. Her time on the track at Lee Academy in Clarksdale was 13.98. This race was inadvertently omitted from a story on the district meet published in last week’s newspaper. Wesleyann Ray and Lori Simpson were the only two MA varsity girls competing in both the District 1-AA Track Meet at Clarksdale and the North State Track Meet at Greenville. Byhalia boys, girls advance to regionals By BARRY BURLESON The Byhalia boys and girls finished second and third, respectively, in the Division 2-4A Track Meet last week on their home track. The Indians totaled 100 points, trailing first-place Center Hill (150). Senatobia was third with 90. Fish fry to benefit MA coach Marshall Academy will hold a fish fry in the MA cafeteria the evening of May 3 in conjunction with the 2011 Foundation Meeting. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the Wicker family to help with coach Keith Wicker’s medical expenses. Kenny Dickerson and crew will prepare the delicious dinner, and both dine-in and carry-out plates will be available. Hours of the dinner will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by Friday, April 29. |
