Obituaries

Connie Mae Allen

Connie Mae Allen, 93, of Slayden, died April 5, 2011, at Alliance HealthCare. She was a member of Slayden Baptist Church and a “Rosie Riveter” during World War II.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 7 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Slayden Cemetery.

She leaves her husband of 69 years, Earl W. Allen; a daughter, Renee Tice (David) of Slayden; two grandchildren, Samantha Morris of Holly Springs, Bubba Tice (Rhonda) of Michigan City and four great-grandchildren, Wood Morris, Samuel Morris, Hunter Tice and Austin Tice.

Pallbearers were Greg Allen, Alan Stacks, Alfred Wilson, Ricky Watkins, Mark Watkins and Billy Brewer.

Howard Reid Carpenter Sr.

Howard Reid Carpenter Sr., 86, of Slayden, died April 17, 2011, at Baptist Collierville Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. He was the widower of Hazel Valentine Carpenter and a farmer.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 19 at Slayden Baptist Church, where he was a member. Burial was in Slayden Cemetery. Bro. Armond Taylor officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves three sons, James R. Carpenter, George W. Carpenter, Howard R. Carpenter Jr., all of Slayden; two daughters, Michelle Allen, Vicki Rodgers, both of Slayden; a sister, Brooksie Brewer of Arlington, Tx.; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Charles Byrne Carpenter, Thomas Shane Carpenter, Gregory Darryl Allen Jr., George Thomas Rodgers Jr., Nicholes Bret Carpenter, Clay Barkley Carpenter, Jeromy George Carpenter, Michael Dustin Allen, Marcus Reid Carpenter and Chase Crawford Carpenter. Honorary pallbearers were Jamie Lynn Shaw and Traci Michelle Rodgers.

Marcus Jecorey Hardin

Marcus Jecorey “Black” Hardin, 32, died April 9, 2011.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 16 at New Mt. Gilliam MB Church in Byhalia. Burial was in Chulahoma Cemetery in Holly Springs. Gillespie Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Armetrice Hardin; ; two daughters, Skylar B. Hardin of Byhalia, Taquarranna L. Holloway of Holly Springs; three sons, Tyler M. Hardin, Cameron D. Hardin of Byhalia, Montavies Hardaway of Olive Branch; his mother, Gazetta Hardin Tuggles of Holly Springs; his father, Louis Tuggles of Jonesboro, Ark.; grandparents, Arlena Liggins, Henry Tuggles, both of Holly Springs; three brothers, Brandon D. Hardin of Holly Springs, Xavier Tuggles, Deonte Tuggles of Aurora, Ill.; and his father- and mother-in-law, Jessie and Carol Webster of Byhalia.

Lillian Smith Nunnally

Lillian Smith Nunnally, 93, of Holly Springs, died April 5, 2011, at Alliance HealthCare System. She was the widow of Virgil Nunnally.

Services were held at 1 p.m. on April 14 at Hernando Road Church of Christ, where she was a member. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Bro. Willie James Hampton officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves two daughters, Elizabeth Graves of Holly Springs, Arietta Williams of Olympia Fields, Ill.; four sons, Eddie H. Nunnally of St. Louis, Mo., L.V. Nunnally of Memphis, Tenn., Ulysses Z. Nunnally of Holly Springs, Willie Nunnally of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Bertha Love of Memphis, Tenn.; 18 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lula Nunnally; and a sister, Henrietta Griffin.

Roy Phillip Powell

Roy Phillip Powell, 57, of Byhalia, died April 16, 2011. He was an electrician and a Marine veteran of Vietnam.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 19 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Byhalia Cemetery.

He leaves his companion, Anita Pearson of Byhalia; two sons, John Powell (Ashley), Justin Powell (Jessica), both of Iuka; a daughter, Susan Compton of Iuka; three brothers, Lloyd Powell of Byhalia, Steve Powell of Nashville, Tenn., Julius Wynne of Earl, Ark.; three sisters, Debbie Lindsey of Byhalia, Lisa Cummings of Parkton, N.C., Brenda High of Mantachie; and nine grandchildren.

Corrine Thompson Pryor

Corrine Thompson Pryor, 87, of Waterford, died April 13, 2011, at Baptist Hospital-DeSoto in Southaven. She was church usher, a choir member, member of Sunrise #166 Order of Eastern Star and a retired factory and domestic worker.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on April 23 at Mt. Peel MB Church in Laws Hill, where she was a member. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Rev. Rondias Cox will officiate. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a daughter, Dorthey Jamerson of Champaign, Ill.; five sisters, Pauline Walker (Asa), Irene Frames, both of Urbana, Ill., Margaret Myles, Barbara Ward, both of Pasadena, Calif., Evelyn Walker (Tulsa) of Montgomery, Ill.; four brothers, Tarther “Jack” Thompson (Betty) of Waterford, Lawrence Thompson, Russell Thompson, John Thompson, all of Aurora, Ill.; two grandchildren, Eric Scott Jamerson, Anthony Jamerson (Angela) of Champaign, Ill.; 12 great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by sisters Tempie Taylor, Lillie Pearl Walker, Cardie Harper, Mammie D. Thompson; brother, Clarence Thompson; and son-in-law, Elmer Jamerson.

Raymond Daniel Smith

Raymond Daniel Smith, 63, of Byhalia, died April 3, 2011 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital in Southaven. He was a Christian, a retired business owner of an auto repair shop and an Army veteran.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on April 6 at Watson Community Church. Burial was in Byhalia Cemetery. Bro. Melvin Shackelford officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Evelyn Smith; a son, Kenneth Ray Smith of Byhalia; a daughter, Sharon Renee Vickers of Hickory Flat; four brothers, Wesley C. Smith of North Port, Ala., Rayford Allen Smith of Marion, Ky., Alvin C. Smith of Millington, Tenn., Melvin Smith of Umitila, Fla.; five sisters, Annie V. Smith of West Little Rock, Ark., Kathleen Bates of Moundville, Ala., Joan Parker of Gordo, Ala., Betty Jean Cook of Southaven, Ivy Dean Bizzell of Golden, Mo.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

J.C. Watson

J.C. Watson, 89, of Byhalia, died April 15, 2011, at his home. He was the widower of Martha Watson, a Baptist, a farmer and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on April 17 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Enterprise Cemetery. Bro. Tony Roberts officiated.

He leaves two sons, Robert Watson of Ripley, James Earl Watson of Pontotoc; three daughters, Mary Walker Gray of Hernando, Linda Taylor of Ecru, Kathy Devaughn of Pontotoc; two brothers, Jessie “Red” Watson, Delmer Watson, both of New Albany; 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Chris Hogue, Shane Waddle, Timmy Hymans, James Walker, Cody Waddle and Justin Anderson. Honorary pallbearers were Renita Walker, Janice Waddle, Stephanie Anderson and Destiny Waddle.
