City plans to replace cast iron pipe By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
city received a plan from the Holly Springs Utility Department to
replace 32 miles of cast iron gas pipe in the central part of downtown
at a price tag of about $6.5 million. Engineers
Larry Britt and Mike Bridges presented their study of the total system
and how they recommend to go about replacing the cast iron pipe, much
laid in the central part of the city beginning in about 1947 and on
through the 1960s. Bridges said carbon steel pipe was used from then
until the 1980s when plastic gaslines were introduced. Plastic pipe
holds up better and does not corrode, he said. Full Story

Pilgrimage events were diversified this year and the Holly Springs Garden Club loved every minute of it. Attendance
was about neck and neck with last year, according to Lisa Childers,
co-chair of ticket sales. Visitors from all over, including the
Netherlands, Canada, California and lots of folks from Kentucky came to
town to enjoy the tours and the fun, she said. Full Story

Ben Ingram story in works By SUE WATSON Staff Writer A
descendant of the late Ben Ingram Jr. is putting together a history of
the trial and acquittal of her grandfather nearly a century ago. Schyleen
Ingram Qualls, the granddaughter of Ben Ingram Jr., was guest speaker
at a recent Holly Springs Rotary Club meeting, where she read from a
book she is writing on the Ingram family. She describes the events
which took place in Byhalia in 1918 and her grandfather’s acquittal by
an all-white jury. Ingram, age 42, was charged with the murder of his
neighbor, Green Brumley, with whom he had a long-standing dispute over
property boundaries. Full Story

Selman remembered as dedicated public servant By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Holly Springs Assistant Police Chief Patricia Selman will be laid to rest Saturday after a long battle with cancer. She is remembered for her leadership and dedication to law enforcement, to the community’s children and as a mother. Selman,
who died Tuesday at the age of 55, began a career in law enforcement
May 7, 1988, with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, serving
under sheriffs Jimmye Dale Green and Ernest Cunningham. She became a
police officer at the city of Holly Springs on Feb. 20, 1996, where she
moved to captain and to assistant chief under the administration of
chief Robert Burby on Oct. 7, 2003. She served as interim police chief
twice for the city, including from June 15, 2004 until Sept. 5, 2006. Full Story

young black males with guns held the clerk at a restaurant on Highway 7

Byhalia police respond to burglary, accident, more The Byhalia Police Department responded to 32 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 1;
miscellaneous, 13; escorts, 5; juveniles, 1; animals, 1; motor vehicle
accidents, 1; fires, 1; burglaries, 1; medical, 8. Byhalia police officers also made six arrests during the past week.
