Earthquake drill April 28 The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency is encouraging everyone in the state to know how to prepare for earthquakes by participating in the Great Central U.S. ShakeOut drill on April 28. The ShakeOut is a 10-state, coordinated earthquake drill that will take place at 10:15 a.m. Residents in Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and Tennessee will all drop, cover and hold on during that drill. Knowing what to do if an earthquake hits will make sure fewer people are injured in an event. “We are all saddened by the loss of life and damage done by the devastating earthquakes in Japan,” said MEMA Director Mike Womack. “While it has been 200 years since a major seismic event has affected our state, we are at risk and we want everyone to be prepared.” To register to participate in the ShakeOut, just visit the MEMA website at www.msema.org and click on the ShakeOut button on the front page. |
