John Caldwell and Mike Tagert are advancing to a Tuesday,
Feb. 1, runoff for Northern District transportation commissioner.
Unofficial totals from Tuesday’s
special election, with 627 of 628 precincts reporting, showed Caldwell
leading the seven-man field with 10,660 votes (21 percent). Tagert had
10,373 votes (21 percent).

With
the untimely death last year of Tom Honecker, developer of Cedar Oaks
Plantation, Fitch Farms-Galena Plantation dedicated its national field
trial to the sportsman. A prominent Ohio field
trainer, Honecker was an avid outdoorsman with a love of bird dog field
trials. He held many offices for a number of clubs, and held a yearly
field trial at Cedar Oaks several weeks before the Fitch Farms trials. Full Story
Juvenile charged with assault By SUE WATSON Staff Writer An
altercation between a number of individuals at a location on Deer Creek
Road January 2 around 1 a.m. led to the arrest of one juvenile and a
second person being taken into custody, according to Sheriff Kenny

Roads in line for work By SUE WATSON Staff Writer With the economy constricted, there is not a lot of money laying around for road improvements in the county. Larry
Britt, county engineer, has found some State Aid and Surface
Transportation Program dollars to stripe about 60 miles of roads in
Marshall County. The state and federal dollars will ease the burden on
the county budget to pay to stripe roads and improve roadway safety. Full Story

Holly Springs police go to variety of calls, make drug arrest Officers
with the Holly Springs Police Department responded to 52 calls for the
week ending January 2, according to chief Robert Pearson. Full Story
Byhalia police go to 27 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 27 calls last week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 2;
miscellaneous, 6; escorts, 8; disturbances, 1; assists, 4; motor
vehicle accidents, 1; fires, 2; medical, 3. Byhalia police officers also made nine arrests during the past week.
Gas prices rising Average retail gasoline
prices in Mississippi have risen 0.8 cents per gallon in the past week,
averaging $2.92/g. This compares with the national average that has
increased 1.4 cents per gallon in the last week to $3.05/g, according
to gasoline price website MississippiGas Prices.com. Including
the change in gas prices in Mississippi during the past week, prices
this week were 39.2 cents per gallon higher than the same day one year
ago and are 12.9 cents per gallon higher than a month ago. The
national average has increased 12.8 cents per gallon in the last month
and stands 39.6 cents per gallon higher than a year ago.
