Indians blank Rebels
By BARRY BURLESON
The Byhalia Indians opened the 2010 baseball season in fine fashion Friday.
Coach Bubba Brown’s team, playing at home, blanked Hickory Flat 5-0.
Starting pitcher Kevin Fitzpatrick and reliever Justin Washington limited the Rebels to just three hits.
Meanwhile, the Byhalia bats produced nine hits on opening day.
“We left eight men stranded though,” Coach Brown said. “We did not get the timely hits when we needed them.”
Fitzpatrick was three of four, with two singles and a double. Getting two singles each were Pat Malone and Tedrick Moore. Adding a hit each were Mitchell Cartwright and Gary Calhoun.
Brown is excited about his team’s potential this season.
“We’re still young,” he said, “but I think we will be a much improved squad over last year.”
The Indians are playing in the Tracey Rodgers Memorial Tournament this week at Marshall Academy. They will face the Patriots Thursday at 5:45 p.m. The tournament ends Friday.
