Lady Lions win north opener By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor Mimicking
two previous seasons, the Lady Lions of H.W. Byers completed their
first leg on the journey to the “Big House” in Jackson. The Lady Lions
hosted the Lady Pirates of Coffeeville Monday in the first game of the
1A North State playoffs. The Lady Pirates tried
hard to hang in with the Lady Lions from the outset and didn’t trail by
many when the first quarter ended. The score was 17-13. The
Lady Lions started to make their move in the second frame. They kept
going to the basket in speedy fashion and also popped a couple from
long distance. Alexis Hardaway and Kourtney Coleman were getting it
done in the paint. They were close to a double digit lead of 32-24 at
intermission. Byers came out of the locker room
after the midway break and probably realized they had allowed the Lady
Pirates to stay that close. They unsheathed all the claws and put on an
explosive burst which left Coffeeville reeling and behind by 15 points
when the third quarter expired. The score was 49-34. Coffeeville
tried to stop the sinking ship. The Lady Pirates took advantage of some
miscues by the Lady Lions in the fourth quarter. They hit a raft full
of treys which threw Byers out of sync for a very brief period. The
Lady Lions recovered and exploded again to go to the 63-48 end result. Coleman and Hardaway were neck and neck for high point honors. Coleman totaled 26 and Hardaway 23. The
Lady Lions (25-6) are scheduled to continue their playoff journey
Thursday with a game against Wheeler at a venue to be decided after
press-time this past Tuesday. The North State Tournament continues
Friday and Saturday with the top two teams advancing to state.
