Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones Turkey and gas prices — again! You
know, in October and early November, right up until early December
even, I love the thought of turkey and dressing, potato salad, pumpkin
pie, etc. By December 26, I’m hoping never to see holiday food again, especially turkey and dressing! Our
granddaughter’s dad Jason is visiting from South Dakota and he and his
mom Barb came by Monday evening. I’d taken the girls to Barb’s house in
Bruce Christmas afternoon. She had a wonderful meal laid out, and I
have to say, I had a piece of the best coconut cake I’ve had in a long
while! I could eat that cake again real soon! Monday night, we had Christmas leftovers. I almost couldn’t put dressing in my mouth and I never even looked at the turkey! The
sweet potatoes were still tasty and Barb had sliced some ham and fried
it. I had some Sister Schubert dinner rolls warming, along with the
obligatory green beans. The potato salad still tasted good (I could
probably eat my potato salad every day!) I
enjoyed the company a whole lot more than the food! Barb also sews --
she’s fantastic with a serger and fleece! We always have a lot to talk
about. Jason and Barb are coming back to dinner Wednesday night before he heads home to South Dakota early Thursday morning. I’m making spaghetti! And I’m hoping Barb will remember the rest of that sour cream coconut cake! •
Jason drove over 20 hours to get here and will obviously have to drive
that far home. He came down here in a big red gas guzzler. I didn’t
think to ask Saturday or Monday about the gas mileage and cost of gas. I do know I’m choking every time I have to fill my car up -- and my car gets 35 mpg! Listening
to the news Tuesday morning, gas prices aren’t going to get any better
anytime soon and no one can figure out why gas is so high. Well, duh! Gas is so high because the oil companies need to make another couple of billion dollars this year. According
to an email we get from “Gas Buddy,” the average retail price of gas in
Mississippi has risen 7.1 cents per gallon this past week, averaging
$2.91 a gallon on Monday. Gas Buddy says that prices on Monday were 43.2 cents higher than this time last year and are 25.9 cents higher than last month. Nationwide, gas prices have increased 17.7 cents during the last month and the price is 42.9 cents higher than last year. I’ve talked about taking the girls to South Dakota in the summer. I wished I owned an oil company! |
