Behind The Scoreboard By Claude Vinson Lots of teams go ‘bowling’ Someone
pointed out to yours truly over the weekend that the bowl season has
already started and that other than the one which is going to garner
the most attention, there has been sparse notice given about the rest.
Of course, the person making that statement probably is not a great
viewer of the sports channels. The next salient question was, “How many
SEC teams made the cut and where are they playing?” That
second query took a little investigating. We know that last season
there were 10 teams bearing the SEC colors taking part in the bowl
games which are spread throughout the latter part of December and the
earlier part of January. Three of the 35 bowls were decided on Saturday
– New Mexico, Humanitarian and New Orleans. No SEC teams were involved
in those. CUSA had an entry in the Beef ‘O’ Brady Bowl on Tuesday
(21st) when Southern Miss took on Louisville. There
are nine SEC entrants this season with Tennessee being the first to see
action on December 30 in the Magic City Bowl. On December 31, Georgia
will appear in the Liberty Bowl (Memphis) against UCF. South Carolina
will be in the Chik-fil-A Bowl on the same date in Atlanta. Two
big crowd pleasers on New Year’s Day are sure to be the Crimson Tide
and Michigan State in the Capital One at Orlando and Mississippi State
and Michigan at Jacksonville. Florida and Penn State will close out the
January 1 schedule at Tampa in the Outback Bowl. The
Razorbacks will tangle with Ohio State in the Sugar Bowl on January 4.
LSU will go to the Cotton Bowl on January 7 versus Texas A&M.
Kentucky will vie with Pittsburgh in the BBVA Compass Bowl in
Birmingham on January 8. And to really get you
into the playoff mood for Super Bowl XLV, the granddaddy of the
collegiates, the BCS Championship will be on Monday, Jan. 10, at
Glendale. This will be the only game where two unbeatens will contest
each other – Auburn (13-0) and Oregon (12-0). I have not seen the odds on this one, but you just have to consider claws over web feet. |
