OpinionFielder’s Choice Count your blessings Santa visited the Burlesons last week. Hopefully, he will be back early morning Saturday, Christmas Day, while everyone’s asleep. I know we will have the milk and cookies ready and waiting. Close to Nowhere Through shopping yet? I’m not! My neighbor Carolyn, who also works up here at the newspaper, has been through Christmas shopping since probably late August-early September. I probably started Christmas shopping last week maybe? Celebrating Spirit of Christmas U.S. Senator Roger F. Wicker The Christmas spirit shines like a beacon through a cold winter’s night in Mississippi. While this year has been difficult for many, we still have much for which to be grateful. During this Christmas season, families are rushing to finish last-minute shopping and preparations for guests. Amid the bustle, it is important we pause a moment to keep in mind all that we have to be thankful for during this time of year. Letters To The Editor Great stewards: The Clarion Ledger newspaper, Jackson, the state’s largest one, wrote on Dec. 7, that the Benton County School District, under the able leadership of Patrick Washington, announced its second budget surplus in two years. Having served for five years during the late 1980s as assistant supervisor of education for the State Department of Education, I know for the district to achieve such financial good standing is a very big deal. The local people should be proud of their superintendent and his staff for being great stewards of the county’s limited resources. Roy DeBerry Need a sidewalk: I live on Chesterman Street in Holly Springs, and I’m complaining about the street. We need a sidewalk on Chesterman St. behind Michael’s Country and Creole (formerly The Hut,) because I see young kids walking to the store and cars just about to run them over sometimes. They have to jump in the grass to get out of the way, because folks drive too fast on that street. Could we please get some help with that or do something about that?
