Seven seek vacant position By SUE WATSON Staff Writer With
barely a month to campaign, seven people have qualified with the
Secretary of State’s office for the January 11, 2011, election to fill
the position of transportation commissioner of the Northern District. The position is vacant due to the death of commissioner Bill Minor of Holly Springs on November 1. Marshall Countian Ray Minor, brother of the former commissioner, is one of the seven candidates. Others
who qualified to run are Dennis C. Grisham of Dumas, Joey Hood of
Marietta, Larry Lee of Grenada, John M. Caldwell Sr. of Nesbit, Warner
McBride of Courtland, and Mike Tagert of Starkville. If there is a runoff between any candidates, that election is scheduled for Feb. 1, 2011. The post will be on the 2011 general election ballot for local and state offices as well. Anyone
interested in becoming a candidate for local elections can turn in
qualifying documents at the circuit clerk’s office beginning Jan. 4,
2011. The deadline for qualifying for local elections is March 1, 2011,
while candidates for state legislature positions have until June 1 to
qualify. The deadline for voter registration for
this special election was Friday, Dec. 10. The deadline for voting
absentee on this special election is Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at the
circuit clerk’s office. “We also will be open Saturday, Jan. 1, as well as Saturday, Jan. 8, for absentee balloting,” Carpenter said. People
who are disabled or unable to come to the circuit clerk’s office to
vote absentee may request a ballot be mailed to their address. These
ballots must be in the circuit clerk’s office by Jan. 10, 2011, at 5
p.m. All county offices, including the circuit clerk’s office, will be closed for holidays December 24-27 and December 31-January 3. |
