set for Jan. 11
Gov. Haley Barbour announced a special election for Northern District transportation commissioner.
The position is vacant due to the death of Bill Minor on November 1.
It will be held on January 11, 2011. The qualifying deadline for individuals interested in the seat is December 12. Because December 12 falls on a Sunday, the deadline to submit qualifying papers to the Secretary of State’s Office is by 5 p.m. on Friday, December 10.
If a runoff election is required for the legislative vacancies, the elections will be held on February 1, 2011. The winner will serve the remainder of the office’s term, through the end of 2011. The position will be on the ballot again in 2011 as part of the regular state election cycle.
The qualifications for the Northern District transportation commissioner position are – a registered voter; a resident of the Northern Supreme Court district; and candidates must also submit a Statement of Intent along with a petition with at least 300 certified signatures requesting the individual’s name be placed on the ballot to the Secretary of State.
