Governor will set special election
Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann’s office has reviewed state law regarding the vacancy in the Northern District transportation commissioner’s office. This vacancy occurred due to the November 1 death of Commissioner Bill Minor.
The applicable statutes set forth the following procedure:
The governor has 15 days from the date the vacancy occurred to proclaim a special election. The special election is to take place within 60 days after the proclamation is issued. The governor has discretion to set the qualifying deadline for candidates who wish to participate in the special election.
“Our office has recommended to the governor’s office that the qualifying deadline for candidates for Northern District transportation commissioner be at least 45 days prior to election day, to give elections officials the time needed to prepare ballots,” Hosemann said.
