| Byers sweeps Cougars H.W. Byers basketball teams picked up wins over Blue Mountain January 19 at home – one coming easy and another not so easy. The Lady Lions dominated from the opening tip and coasted to the 78-40 victory. They built a 17-point lead after one quarter and never looked back. Alexis
Hardaway and Kourtney Coleman accounted for more than half the points,
scoring 24 and 20, respectively. Others reaching double digits were
Brionne Gulledge with 18 and Kyra Gulledge with 10. The Lady Lions improved to 18-5 on the season and 6-0 in the district. The Byers boys had a fight on their hands but used a solid second half to beat Blue Mountain 66-57. “We
had beaten them handily earlier in the season at their place, and I
guess it was locked in our minds that it would be automatic this time,”
coach Jason Thompson said. “We have to realize that we have to play
hard every time out – never take anyone lightly. Just showing up isn’t
good enough.” The Cougars used a 24-10 run in the second quarter to shock the home crowd with a 30-20 lead. But Byers outscored the visitors 22-10 in the third quarter and 24-17 in the fourth to rally for the nine-point win. “We figured out how to play basketball in the second half,” Thompson said. Marcus Rayford gunned in 24 points for the Lions. Jeremy Williams added 14. The Byers boys improved to 6-14 overall and 4-2 in the district.
