Lady Patriots pick up pair of victories The
Marshall Academy softball team picked up two wins last week, one in
extra innings over Hebron Christian School and the other a rout of West
Memphis. The Lady Pats pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth to beat Hebron 2-1 August 30. “This
is one of the best games we have played all year,” said head coach
Susan Rodgers. “We had faced this team twice and they had beaten us
twice.” There was no score until the fourth inning when a two-out error allowed Hebron to get on the board first. In
the bottom of the fifth MA’s Darcie Gibson led off with a single and
Caitlyn Brooks laid down the sacrifice bunt. Gibson had her eyes on
third and safely reached that base. Then a throwing error by Hebron
allowed her to cross the plate, tying the game at 1. At
the end of regulation, the score was still 1-1 so the contest went into
international rules, with a team’s last batter out placed on second
base with no outs. Neither Marshall or Hebron scored in the eighth. MA held the visitors in the top of the ninth. Chelsey
Gilliam was the Lady Patriots’ runner on second in the bottom of the
ninth. Elizabeth Skelton laid down the bunt to move Gilliam to third.
Mallary Covington bunted but the defense held Gilliam. Gibson followed
with a bunt to load the bases. Seventh grader Hannah Pasco then stepped
into the batter’s box and ripped the ball to left field, scoring
Gilliam and winning the game for Marshall. Covington pitched a complete game, striking out eight and giving up three hits and one walk. MA vs. W. Memphis Marshall traveled to West Memphis August 31 and scored 16 runs off eight hits. The Lady Knights were held scoreless. Getting two hits each for MA were Kat Moore, Gilliam, Skelton and Brooks. Covington pitched a complete game, allowing one hit and no walks, and she struck out three. The
Lady Pats (7-11) hosted Indianola Tuesday. Next Monday and Tuesday,
Sept. 13 and 14, respectively, they visit Indianola and Magnolia
Heights with the games starting at 4 p.m. each day.
