Obituaries
Richard (Buddy) Brown, 84, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 10, 2010 at his home. He was a retired farmer. Services were held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 16 at Sand Hill MB Church in Lamar, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Etoy Bogard officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his caregivers, Bessie Brown Perry, Geneva Blackmon, both of Holly Springs; and his brother, S.P. Brown of Ashland. Pallbearers were Chris Robinson, De’Undre Dortch, Charles Guy, Jarvis Robinson, Earnest Blackmon and Jamie Guy. Honorary pallbearers were James C. Dortch, Thomas L. Brown, J.T. Blackmon, Willie Brown and Clarence Brown. Ruby Jean Davis Ruby Jean Davis, 71, of Nesbit, died Jan. 15, 2010 in Hickory Flat. She was the widow of Hilton Davis and a Baptist. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 20 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Byhalia Cemetery. She leaves three sons, Billy Davis, Danny Davis, both of Hickory Flat, Michael Davis of Nesbit; a daughter, Dainne Logan of Nesbit; a sister, Mary Byers of Byhalia; four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Sara Ormon Davis Sara Ormon Davis, 73, died Jan. 14, 2010 at Gwinnett Medical Center in Georgia. She was born in the Liberty community in Benton County. She was a graduate of Ashland High School and attended Dallas County Community College in Dallas, Tx. She and her family lived in Texas for 17 years prior to moving to Georgia. A celebration of life service was held on Jan. 17 at Wages Snellville Chapel in Snellville, Ga. Another service will be held Jan. 23 at Liberty United Methodist Church in Ashland. Burial will be in Liberty Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home is assisting in the arrangements. She leaves her husband, Cecil (Pat) Davis; daughters Cynthia Davis Wonnacott, Molly Davis Moore, Peggy Davis Storey; and six grandchildren. Jeanette Dunning Jeanette Dunning, 77, of Potts Camp, died Jan. 16, 2010 at her home. She was owner and operator of Corner Quick Stop and a member of Bethlehem Methodist Church. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 18 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Bethlehem Methodist Church Cemetery. She leaves her husband, Ralph Dunning; a son, Dwayne Dunning of Potts Camp; a brother, J.B. Work of Potts Camp; four sisters, Jennie Mitchell of Holly Springs, Lula Westmoreland of Cordova, Tenn., Agness Gordon of Hernando, Ina Faye Thornton of Memphis; two grandchildren and a great-grandson. Flora Virginia Fant Flora Virginia Fant, 93, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 16, 2010 at Alliance HealthCare. She was the widow of William Robert Fant Sr., a member of First Baptist Church and a resident at Christopher’s Personal Care Home in Holly Springs for two years. Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 19 at Hill Crest Cemetery. Dr. Curtis Ferrell officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves four sons, W.R. (Bobby) Fant, Billy Thomas Fant, Joe S. Fant, all of Holly Springs, James Edward Fant of Horn Lake; a brother, Andrew Carter of Ripley; her caretaker, Nicholas Vasquez of Holly Springs; five grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by 11 siblings and two grandchildren. Pallbearers were sons and grandsons.
Monroe (Dan) Howell Jr., 79, of Holly Springs, died Jan. 10, 2010 at Baptist Hospital-Desoto in Southaven. A member of Strawberry MB Church, he was a church deacon, a member of the church choir, a member of Masonic Lodge #339 and a retired security officer with Rust College. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Strawberry MB Church, where she was a member. Rev. Willie Jeffries officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements. He leaves his wife, Pearlie Jordan Howell; two daughters, Helen Howell of Lamar, Rosie Taylor of Memphis, Tenn.; a stepdaughter, Gloria Williams of Atlanta, Ga.; three stepsons, Jessie Thompson of Holly Springs, Curtis Thompson of Memphis, Tenn., Steven Thompson of Ripley, Tenn.; and three sisters, Emma Howell, Evelyn Howell, both of Holly Springs, Lugusta Jenning of Mt. Clemens, Mich. He was preceded in death by a son, James E. Howell. Pallbearers were Dennis Nabors, Kevin Howell, Jason Thompson, Daniel Isom, Marquis Howell, Lasalle Isom, Michael Howell, Calvin Woods, Alvertis Ingram and Kelsey Freeman. Honorary pallbearers were Curtis Thompson, Steven Thompson, Tony Nunnally, Anderson Cook, Clarence Jordan, John Jordan, Jessie Thompson, Barry Taylor, Lawrence Jordan, Strawberry deacon board and Powell Chapel Lodge #339.
Lurlen Hamilton Isom, 86, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Slayden, died Jan. 10, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. She was the widow of Abe Isom. Services were held at 3 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Hudsonville CME Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Bobby Wilson officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves five daughters, Lynwood Jones, Jeannie Porter, Verlean Buntyn, Victoria Jenkins, Christina Sharp, all of Memphis, Tenn.; six sons, Fred Isom, Grady Isom, Curtis Isom, all of Memphis, Tenn., Charles Isom of Slayden, Clyde Isom of Corinth, John L. Isom of Chicago, Ill.; two sisters, Lynwood Stephenson of Chicago, Ill., Petrolia Rucker of Memphis, Tenn.; 33 grandchildren 42 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three children, Rittie Jean Burke, Mae Lovie Isom, Abe Isom Jr. Pallbearers were Cedric Jones, Chris Isom, Reginald Buntyn, Dennis Isom, Marcus Jones and Kevin Bryson. Honorary pallbearers were John Isom, Clyde Isom, Grady Isom, Charles Isom, Fred Isom and Curtis Isom.
Mary Edna Mask, 79, of Crenshaw, died Jan. 13, 2010 at Baptist Desoto Hospital in Southaven. She was the widow of Harvey Eston Mask and a member of Sarah Baptist Church in Sarah. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 16 at Wells Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Longtown Cemetery in Crenshaw. Rev. Howard Beam officiated. She leaves two daughters, Diane Mask Smith of Nesbit, Dolores (Lowie) Mask Chrestman of Hernando; five sons, Harvey Delane Mask of Randolph, Samuel Wayne Mask of Senatobia, Gerald Ray (Dick) Mask of Lee’s Summit, Mo., Billy Eston (Bill) Mask of Longtown, Perry Michael Mask of Holly Springs; two sisters, Jane Sanders Eads of Columbus, Sherry Sanders Hetherington of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 18 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Amelia Joy Mask and a son, Donald Glenn Mask. The family requests anyone wishing to send memorials to forward those to A & E Hospice, 6810 Crumpler Blvd., Suit # 101, Olive Branch, MS 38654. Richard Curtis Key Richard Curtis Key, 34, died Jan. 16, 2010 at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel. He was a lifelong resident of the Ellisville, MS School for the Blind. Graveside services were held on Jan. 19 at Forest Hill South Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn. Forest Hill South Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his mother, Linda Key Holland, a sister, Annette Lode; grandmother, Margaret Hudgins, all of Byhalia.; and grandfather, Curtis Smith of Jackson. He was preceded in death by his father, Jimmy Key of Memphis, Tenn. The family requests that any memorials be directed to the Ellisville School for the Blind, 1101 Hwy. 11 South, Ellisville, MS 39437-4444.
Mattie B. Morgan, 81, of Ashland, died Jan. 6, 2010 at her home. She was the widow of Roosevelt Morgan Sr. She joined Sand Hill Church and later moved her membership and joined Palestine MB Church, where she served on the usher board and the mother board. She was born April 29, 1928 in Hughes, Ark. Services were held at 12 noon on Jan. 14 at Palestine MB Church in Michigan City. Burial was in Samuel Chapel Church Cemetery in Ashland. Pastor, Rev. James Williams, officiated. Serenity Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves eight children, Roosevelt Morgan Jr. of Holly Springs, Walter and Roy Morgan, both of Ripley, Joseph Morgan Sr. of Lamar, Mattie Morgan of Memphis, Tenn., Margaret Morgan of Ashland, Ethel Hampton and Vaitor Joyner, both of Lamar; 28 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by six children, Louise Tipler, Annie, Phyllis, Dock and Charlie Morgan, Lawrence Wright; siblings and two great-grandchildren. Mark L. Palmer Mark L. Palmer, 51, of Baldwyn, died Jan. 18, 2010 at North MS Medical Center. He was an ambulance EMT for NMMC. He was a member of Casey Creek Baptist Church. Services were held at 2 p.m. on Jan. 20 at Casey Creek Baptist Church with Bro. Mike Reeves officiating. Burial was in Casey Creek Cemetery. Waters Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He leaves his wife, Lynette “Tootie” Baker Palmer; two daughters, Jennifer Bishop, Autumn Bishop, both of Florida; his parents, Rev. and Mrs. Monty Scherff of Ripley (formerly of Holly Springs); a sister, Chris Dunn of Milan, Tenn.; five brothers, Carl Scherff of Tupelo, Fred Scherff of Brandon, Virgil Scherff of Waterford, Jerry Palmer and Tim Scherff, both of Ripley; and one grandchild, Peyton Henry of Florida. He was preceded in death by his father, Travis L. Palmer. Pallbearers will be Cary Leathers, Tommy “Buffalo” Owings, Gable Reeves, Brian Martin, Jim Foster and Jack Foster. Honorary pallbearers will be the NMMC ambulance service. Gerald Picard Gerald Picard, 63, of Walls, died Jan. 8, 2010 at Delta Medical Center in Memphis, Tenn. He was a member of St. Andrews Bay United Methodist Church and a jeweler. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Holly Springs Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements. He leaves two sons, John-Michael Picard of Houston, Tx., Joseph Matthew Picard of Saraland, Ala.; a daughter, Julie Church of Walls; a brother, Larry Picard of Nashville, Tenn.; two sisters, Judith, Janet Pierce of Pensacola, Fla.; and six grandchildren. Amy Stone Amy Stone, 98, of Ashland, died Jan. 17, 2010 at her home. She was the widow of Ruben Woodson Stone. Services were held at 1 p.m. on Jan. 19 at Canaan Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Bro. Paul Adams officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves a son, Dale Stone of Memphis, Tenn.; two daughters, Jo Barnes of Olive Branch, Meg Thomas of Memphis, Tenn.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Martha Sledge Tucker, 92, of Chicago, Ill, formerly of Holly Springs, died Jan. 8, 2010 at Jackson Square Rehabilitation Center in Chicago. She was the widow of Simon Tucker and a retired domestic worker in private homes in Holly Springs. Services were held at 12 noon on Jan. 15 at Grays Chapel CME Church, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Joe T. Lester officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves two daughters, Pauletta Robinson, Bessie McKinnon, both of Chicago, Ill.; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Pallbearers were Lambart McKinnon, Hermon Riddle, Gaston McKinnon, Jesse Holland, John Belfor, John Henry Sledge and Walker Tucker. Mary Wilkerson Mary Wilkerson, 69, of Hickory Flat, died Jan. 11, 2010 at her home. She was the widow of Donald Wilkerson and a cook. Services were held at 11 a.m. on Jan. 14 at Hickory Flat Methodist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Glenfield Cemetery. Bro. Brownie Tohill officiated. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. She leaves two sons, Robert (Tony) Clark of New Albany, Austin Wilkerson of Hickory Flat; four daughters, Mary Jo Rutherford of Holly Springs, Myra Clarkson of New Albany, Sherri Smith of Gulfport, Janet Joyner of Hickory Flat; two brothers, Robert Gordon of Myrtle, Tommy Gordon of New Albany; eight sisters, Martha Rossell, Janie Frazier, Ann Gregory, Peggy Pickens, Carolyn Anthony, Cathy Huffman, Barbara Steward, Brenda Shettles, all of New Albany, Deloris Easter, Pam Foster, Teresa Moore, all of Southaven; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
