Seven-on-seven

Marshall Academy placed second in its pool last weekend at a seven-on-seven tournament in Oxford at FNC Park. They competed against Charleston, Water Valley and Vardaman. The Patriots went 2-2 Friday and 2-2 Saturday. They lost 19-13 to Charleston in the championship game of the pool when the Tigers intercepted an MA pass in the end zone. “Our kids stepped up and performed and competed,” coach Keith Wicker said. “Three weeks ago, we didn’t know how to play seven-on-seven. Coach Shaun Holtz, 30, is replacing Matt Horton, who led the Cardinals just one season.

It was advertised as an hour-long special to be aired on ESPN last Thursday evening to let the world of sports hear from the “horse’s mouth” just where Cleveland’s not so favorite (anymore) would be taking up his new residence (or should that be kingdom?). Actually, it lasted a lot longer than the proposed hour.

Photos by Barry Burleson Indians in tournament The Byhalia Indians competed in a seven-on-seven tournament Friday and Saturday in Oxford at FNC Park. The 4A Indians were matched up against Oxford, New Albany and Southaven in their pool. They went 1-3 Friday, beating Oxford, and then lost in overtime to Southaven and double overtime to New Albany on Saturday. “We played good,” coach Markeith Washington said. “I’m proud of my guys. Southaven is a 6A school and was the best seven-on-seven team in competition at Mississippi State.We were in a tough bracket, but I asked to be in it, because I wanted our guys competing against strong, established football programs.” (At top) A couple of Indians put the tag on a Charger. The Indians open practice July 26 for the season ahead. They will host a jamboree August 13 before hosting Booker T. Washington in the season opener, a “classic game,” on Friday night, Aug. 20.
