Byers tackling varsity football By BARRY BURLESON Editor Another Marshall County school will get a full taste of Friday night football this fall. The
H.W. Byers Lions will play their first varsity schedule as an
independent. The start-up program played a junior high slate in 2008
and both junior high and junior varsity games last year. “We’re looking forward to it,” said coach James Kimbrough. “I like a challenge, and this will be a challenge for our team. “Everybody around here is excited, and everybody has put in a lot of hard work.” Coach
Kimbrough was hard at work last week - measuring off the field behind
the school’s gymnasium, painting it and getting ready for the new goal
posts. “I’m just trying to stay ahead,” he said, “and be ready when it gets here.” The Lions have been busy this summer lifting weights and competing in seven-on-seven football at Byhalia High School. Practice
starts July 26. Byers will kick off its first-ever high school season
August 20 with a “classic game” at home versus Coldwater. They
will play an abbreviated seven- or eight-game schedule this season
prior to joining a Mississippi High School Activities Association
division in 2011. They go to Holly Springs High School August 27 and
then host Tupelo Christian Preparatory School September 4. “It’s
hard to find games - playing independent football,” Kimbrough said.
“But this will be a good measuring stick for us to see how we will do
in division football. We will see where we are as a team. “We’re playing larger schools, like Holly High, and smaller ones, like Houlka. We will see how we match up.”
