Breaking News A Marshall County Deputy Patrol Officer died following a single-vehicle accident on Red Banks Road Friday, according to Coroner James Richard Anderson. Deputy Carole Jean Scruggs lost control of her patrol car on Red Banks Road sometime before 7:30 a.m., June 25, when the vehicle left the road and flipped one or more times, he said. Scruggs was airlifted to the Memphis Med where she was later pronounced dead around mid-morning, Anderson said. (See full story in next week’s paper.) Breaking News Nine-year-old Michael Anthony Nunnally of Holly Springs drowned Thursday around 4:59 p.m. trying to save a six-year-old boy who had slipped off the bank into the creek on Beale Road, according to Coroner James Richard Anderson. Four children and two adults were on a fishing outing at the creek when the accident occurred, he said. An adult was able to retrieve the six-year-old but strong currents swept the nine-year-old away before he could be pulled out of the water, Anderson said. (See full story in next week’s paper.) Local and state leaders celebrated Thursday with their newest business partner, Toyota Mississippi, whose announcement from its Blue Springs assembly plant caught many by surprise. Toyota will build the world’s best-selling car - the Corolla - at Blue Springs and expects to be ready by fall of 2011. The site is located on Highway 78 (future Interstate 22), just 31 miles east of the Marshall County line.

Byhalia police officers respond to variety of calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 42 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 4; motor vehicle accidents, 2; escorts, 5; assists, 1; medical assistance, 10; fires, 6; miscellaneous, 12; and damaged property, 2. Byhalia police officers also made four arrests during the past week, according to Chief Looney. |
