OpinionFielder’s Choice Hard for me not to coach I guess the coaching never leaves you. Saturday, I was asked to keep the scorebook for our 16-year-old baseball team as we competed in a tournament in DeSoto County. Close to Nowhere Snake dance No. 2 • I don’t know why, but my house is always in a state of chaos. It’s a rare day that I spend quietly — sewing, napping, reading, etc. Thursday was one of those rare days. Our daughter Dana and our granddaughters Mere and Remy were in Lexington to watch the Belmont Stakes with a bunch of “horse racing” friends. Wyatt’s World MS joins list of states fighting medical program Gov. Haley Barbour has added Mississippi to a list of states fighting the federal government’s new medical program. “The Health Care Law passed earlier this year is an unprecedented expansion of federal power,” Gov. Barbour said. “The Constitution does not give Congress or the federal government the authority to force every American to purchase health insurance.” Letters To The Editor I want to be proud of city: Does it bother you, as a citizen of Holly Springs, that many of our intersections need mowing, grass along the sides of roads need mowing, and trash needs to be picked up along our streets, especially those going out of town? I don’t want to complain, just ask some questions and offer some possible solutions. My questions: Does the City of Holly Springs have a department that is responsible for this? If so, do they have the equipment and personnel that are needed? Do the residents of Holly Springs pay sales taxes, ad valorem taxes and state income taxes of which part of these go to the city to provide services such as these? Are some of these areas privately owned and the landowners not keeping them up? If they are, isn’t there something that the city can do about this? Possible solutions, some are posed as questions: If there is a city department responsible for this, please do your job. Is there a “line of command” in the city to see that this job is satisfactorily completed? If you don’t have the necessary equipment, purchase a push mower. If you don’t have the personnel to do this, can the city not use city and county inmates? Does the city need to contract for these services? Would a “private contractor” cost less money and do a better job? Advertise and accept bids for this to see what it would cost. Do the citizens of Holly Springs need to “adopt” these areas and keep them up themselves? I said that I was not going to complain, I guess I did. I do not know the answers to the above questions and it is not my job to know them, look into them, resolve them, or look for alternatives. However, it is my taxes and the taxes of all residents of Holly Springs that I think are supposed to be used to provide this type of service. It is also an “eyesore” that I have to look at every day. I want to be proud of our city and I want visitors to Holly Springs to like what they see when they come here, shop, tell their friends about our city, and come back. I do not believe that the way we are currently “keeping up” our city is sending this message. Hey, it is just my opinion.
