ELECTION RESULTS:
Ross wins in Marshall, but Nunnelee gets Republican nod

Alan Nunnelee of Tupelo won the Republican primary Tuesday, June 1, in the race for U.S. representative, 1st Congressional District.

Unofficial results district-wide show Nunnelee received 52 percent of the vote. Trailing were Henry Ross of Eupora (33 percent) and Angela McGlowan of Oxford (15 percent).

Nunnelee led the ballot in most all counties.

But he did not lead the ballot in Marshall. Ross was the top vote-getter here. Unofficial totals in Marshall had Ross with 514 votes, Nunnelee with 339 and McGlowan with 127.

Nunnelee advances to face Democratic incumbent Travis Childers and seven others in the November 2 general election. Others include – Constitution Party candidate Gail Giamarita; independents A.G. Baddley, Les Green, Rick “Rico” Hoskins and Wally Pang; Libertarian Party candidate Harold Taylor; and Reform Party candidate Barbara Dale Waser.

HSUD getting supply building

The Holly Springs Utility Department is working to get better control of its supply yard, which entails some fencing improvements and a new shed to cover supplies that are damaged by the sun’s rays.

Remembering heroes

Bill Janssen, with the Collins-Hurdle VFW Post 5697, helps put out United States flags at the graves of about 240 veterans buried at Hill Crest Cemetery. The tattered and torn flags on the downtown square in Holly Springs were replaced Saturday by Beth White, Travis, Blake and Benjamin Houston, he said. Two face drug charges

Relay for Life draws near

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is set for June 11-12 in Holly Springs at Sam Coopwood Park.

The survivor’s lap begins at 6 p.m. Friday, June 11, and the relay continues unabated until 6 a.m. Saturday, June 12.

Shriners help young burn victim

A baby, scalded on the abdomen by a bowl of hot oatmeal at 13 months, is the picture of happiness at age 4, thanks to help from the Shriners Burn Hospital in Galveston, Texas.

Madison Kimbrough smiled, twisted and turned in her pretty yellow summer dress last week as she took bites off marshmallows at Aunt Whooey’s in Holly Springs. Her grandmother Suzie Sexton is a big fan and thankful to the Shriners for all they have done for her grandchild.

Holly Springs police officers respond to variety of calls

All dog licenses must be renewed during the month of June, according to chief Robert Pearson. Licenses cost $10 each and may be obtained at the Holly Springs Police Department.
