Holly Springs’ Dawkins attains college degree
Former Holly High basketball star Kenny Dawkins graduated Saturday, May 15, from Lamar University.
Dawkins and his mother, Wanda Richmond, traveled to Beaumont, Texas, for the commencement, putting closure to another challenge in his life.
Dawkins earned a BA degree in general studies from Lamar, where he was also a standout basketball player for the Cardinals.
After finishing his studies at Lamar in December 2009, he has gone through the Development League and played with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers.
He later joined the Southwest Texas Mavericks in the ABA League and the team ended their season by winning the national championship. Dawkins’ awards included Rookie of the Year and All Rookie First Team in the ABA League.
“My goal was to do something I never thought I could do, and that was to finish college,” Dawkins said. “Had it not been for God, my parents, coaches and basketball, I probably would not have been successful in earning a high school diploma or a college degree.”
Dawkins, who helped lead coach Naylond Hayes’ Holly Springs Hawks to back-to-back state championships in 2004 and 2005, has earned many awards throughout his tenure as a basketball player, but said he still has miles to go in order to meet other goals. He has plans to continue his career as a professional basketball player.
