ELECTION RESULTS: Ross wins in Marshall, but Nunnelee gets Republican nod By BARRY BURLESON Editor Alan
Nunnelee of Tupelo won the Republican primary Tuesday, June 1, in the
race for U.S. representative, 1st Congressional District. Unofficial
results district-wide show Nunnelee received 52 percent of the vote.
Trailing were Henry Ross of Eupora (33 percent) and Angela McGlowan of
Oxford (15 percent). Nunnelee led the ballot in most all counties. But
he did not lead the ballot in Marshall. Ross was the top vote-getter
here. Unofficial totals in Marshall had Ross with 514 votes, Nunnelee
with 339 and McGlowan with 127. Nunnelee advances
to face Democratic incumbent Travis Childers and seven others in the
November 2 general election. Others include – Constitution Party
candidate Gail Giamarita; independents A.G. Baddley, Les Green, Rick
“Rico” Hoskins and Wally Pang; Libertarian Party candidate Harold
Taylor; and Reform Party candidate Barbara Dale Waser.

The
Slayden Branch of the Bank of Holly Springs was held up by armed
robbers at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, according to sheriff Kenny
Dickerson. Three black male suspects wearing
bandannas or black masks and flashing big handguns came into the bank
and demanded cash from tellers, he said. Full Story
Dilapidated housing units to be rebuilt By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Holly Springs Board of Aldermen, at the behest of Mayor Andre’ DeBerry,
passed motions and resolutions that will put in motion the
rehabilitation of apartments at Mississippi Industrial College Homes. Only
about half of the 100 apartments are habitable, DeBerry said, with the
remaining in deplorable conditions. They are located on West Woodward
Avenue just off Martin Luther King Drive. Full Story

Funding still priority for supervisors By SUE WATSON Staff Writer With
tighter than usual budgets the last two years, the Marshall County
Board of Supervisors continues to look for novel ways to fund
much-needed projects, including an airport runway expansion. Bill
Mobley, executive director of the Marshall County Industrial
Development Authority, said the word is out to pilots who would sign
letters saying they would use the Holly Springs Airport if the runway
was extended. He would like enough funding to extend the runway from
3,200 feet to 5,000 feet. A thriving airport helps with recruiting
industry to Marshall County, he said. Full Story

Byhalia police respond to variety of calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 36 calls during the past week. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 5; motor
vehicle accidents, 3; disturbances, 1; domestic calls, 1; escorts, 1;
animal-related calls, 1; juveniles, 2; assists, 2; medical assistance,
7; fires, 1; and miscellaneous calls, 12. Byhalia police officers made four arrests during the past week.
