Saturday’s race. He finished the course in 15:27. |
It was Kyle Lewis’ first Killer Kudzu. But the former Ole Miss runner took the lead early and cruised to the top prize. He finished the Holly Springs 5K in 15:27 Saturday morning. “I
love the course,” said the 24-year-old Lewis, who lives in Oxford and
goes to graduate school. “It was really nice – through the old downtown
area – and it was a perfect day, kind of overcast. “It went by fast, but it was tough, too. Those last couple of hills got to me.” The first female finisher was Sheryl Chatfield, 48, also of Oxford. Her time was 20:03. It was her second year to run the Killer Kudzu route. “It’s a really fun race,” she said. “I really like it. I love the hills. It’s scenic and more of a square than a straight line. “It was a pretty day for running – breezy but a bit of shade. This race is very challenging.” | Photo by Barry Burleson
Instructions Scott Beggs (right) gives some instructions to runners as they line up for the start of the race. |
Race
coordinator Scott Beggs of American Pacific was pleased with the number
of runners. One hundred and forty-six finished the race. | Strolling Tammy Rappa and daughter Gracie finish the 5k. |
“This
is a great turnout,” he said. “We switched to a morning run, and it
went well. But from the feedback I’m getting, most would rather have
the evening.” Carri Hutchens, who assists with the race, said one child finished the One Mile Fun Run wearing flip-flops. “And the T-shirts were legendary,” Hutchens said. “Many people run just to keep a collection of those.” Race results follow.
