Keayana and Keayandra King, daughters of proud mother Fabrica Collins,
tied for first place winner of the Holly Springs Spelling Bee. Both
students attend Holly Springs Primary School, where the spelling bee
was held this year. Top junior athlete Jessica Shaffer was
awarded outstanding offensive player and the best rebounder for
Marshall Academy girls’ junior high basketball team. Jessica, an eighth
grader, is 5’ 11-1’2” tall and is expected to dominate the court next
season. In addition to being an honor roll student, she has qualified
for the world championships in the National Barrel Horse Association
and is a top contender in the Tenn. Jr. High School Rodeo Association. 25 Years Ago - May 16, 1985 Mary R. Minor named ‘Pilot of the Year’ The
annual dinner program for the local Pilot Club was held at the Marshall
County Library April 15. During the awards program, Sallye Ball Clayton
announced that Mary Ruth Minor was ‘Pilot of the Year.’ Christy
Crockett was named ‘Anchor of the Year.’ Marshall places in state track meet Marshall
Academy runner Johnny Ray placed first in the 800 meter run at the
Academy State Track Meet in Greenville, Saturday. Ray set a new record
in the North Mississippi Meet last week when he ran the race in
2:02:74, breaking the old record of 2:06:37. 50 Years Ago - May 19, 1960 Kate Clark art museum The
Kate Freeman Clark Art Gallery has been recently completed. When the
pictures have all been hung, there will be over 1,000 of them, all
painted by the same artist, Kate Clark. This is another first for Holly
Springs. Seniors honored at buffet supper Ellen Parnell,
Mary Francis Rather and Rowan Thompson of the senior class at Holly
Springs High School, were honored guests at an informal buffet at the
Lodge at Wall Doxey State Park Friday. Hosts were Rev. and Mrs.
Stanford Parnell, Mr. and Mrs. Lytle A. Rather, and Mrs. Ben Thompson.
Invited guests were Mrs. John Lester, sponsor; Mr. and Mrs. Norman
McKenzie, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Williams, Mrs. Dave McLeary, Mrs. L.A.
Rather, Mrs. Jess Rowan, Kay Thompson, Alec and Dave Rather and Bill
Parnell, along with the entire senior class and their dates. Miss
Parnell received with Donnie Abel and Miss Rather received with Jerry
Moore.
