| Report from the MS Senate Senator Bill Stone District 2 Mississippi Legislature begins new session The
Mississippi Legislature had a short but productive week last week. On
opening day of the 2010 session the Senate approved House Bill 338 that
will facilitate construction of a $300-million pipe-making facility in
Tunica County that will employ 500 workers over the next five years. The
average wage will be above $30,000 and the company is expected to draw
spinoff businesses such as trucking, material suppliers, mechanic shops
and food establishments among others. The
Senate’s unanimous vote in conjunction with the House approved a $35
million incentive package that will help the Germany-based Wilh Schulz
GMBH, open its first facility in North America. They will make
cold-formed clad metal pipes that are used in the oil industry and
others. Tunica County will benefit greatly from the facility, as will
counties all across north Mississippi. The Senate
also approved legislation that lowered the amount of money that
employers pay into the Workforce Enhancement Training Fund, which funds
job skills training at the state’s community and junior colleges. The fund operates with money from companies that pay unemployment compensation. There have been 321 bills filed by senators this first week of the session. The deadline for requesting general legislation is January 13 and the last day to introduce those bills is January 18.
