McKenzie new golf coach at Blue Mountain
Danny McKenzie, sports information director at Blue Mountain College for the past two years, has been named the Toppers’ golf coach.
McKenzie, a lifelong golfer whose 30-year newspaper career included several years reporting on golf from high school to professional levels, will coach both men’s and women’s teams in the fall when BMC launches its NAIA program in TranSouth Athletic Conference.
“Danny McKenzie has the experience in golfing and love of the sport which position him to launch the intercollegiate golf program at Blue Mountain College in an exemplary manner,” said Dr. Bettye Rogers Coward, BMC president. “We look forward to seeing Coach McKenzie lead our first golf team.”
McKenzie, a native of Holly Springs, will replace Jerry Conner, who recently resigned as men’s basketball and golf coach to return to his home in Phoenix, Ariz.
“I am thrilled that Danny has agreed to be our men’s and women’s golf coach,” said BMC athletics director Lavon Driskell. “Danny has a love and excitement for golf and working with young people. He will be a definite plus for our athletic program at BMC, as he brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in golf. We are looking for great things out of Danny and our golf program.”
“I’m looking forward to working with Coach Driskell and the entire BMC family to help get the golf program established,” McKenzie said. “There are a lot of good young golfers in the Mid-South that want a chance to play at the next level, and I’m looking forward to working with them at BMC.”
During his sports writing career, McKenzie reported on several PGA tour events, six major championships, Mississippi and Kentucky state amateur championships, the Mississippi PGA Invitational, Kentucky Open, and several high school and college events. He has also competed in many area amateur tournaments.
