Byhalia Indians fall to Lafayette By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The
Byhalia Indians, nearing the end of their regular season, hosted the
Commodores of Lafayette County April 20 and held their own for four
complete innings. They had jumped out to a 3-0 lead and still were two
runs ahead at 3-1 at the beginning of the fifth. Mitchell
Cartwright was still hurling for the Indians. Lafayette’s Josh Mills
connected on one for a single and an RBI. Mills would score himself a
short while later after tagging up and speeding in on a sacrifice fly
to center. This made the game a 3-3 tie in four and a half innings. Jarrett
Patton was still on the hill for the Commodores. He controlled the
Indians with one strikeout and two cut-offs at first. Five innings had
been completed and the score was still knotted at 3. Coach
Bubba Brown switched pitchers at the top of the sixth. He sent Kevin
Fitzpatrick to the hill, relieving Cartwright. He faced John Jeffrey
Nelson, who rapped a double that came to earth between the center and
left fielders. Fitzpatrick then took out the next Commodore hitter with
a 2-2 count. He got the next batter on the same count. Luke McCullough
laid solid steel on a 2-1 count and the ball zipped past the third
bagger. Nelson scored on the RBI to put the visitors one run ahead.
Fitzpatrick and Corey German retired the side when they jammed up a
runner from third trying for home. Byhalia went three and out after putting one on base. Six innings were complete and the visitors were up by one at 4-3. Mills
singled and moved on to second on a walk by Hunter Robinson. Patton
laid down a bunt which scored Mills. The Commodores scored another when
the Indians failed to make the double play. But they came back and
threw out the runner at third. Byhalia closed it out when they went three up and three out. The 6-3 loss dropped the Indians to 9-10 on the season. Byhalia then visited Lafayette on Friday and completed the 2010 campaign with an 8-2 loss to the Commodores.
