OpinionFielder’s Choice Never had a better teacher Good teachers are so much more than teachers. They inspire. They guide. They make learning fun. And they’re tough, too. On January 28 of this year, one of my all-time favorites, Charlotte Hall Rich, died at age 57. She had survived Stage 4 cancer for more than 10 years. Close to Nowhere I just don’t understand We have a news story on the front page this week that is something I just cannot fathom! To be fair, we have had a lot of stories in the nearly 25 years I’ve been at the newspaper that I have trouble understanding “why” and “how.” Wyatt’s World Autism-vaccine debate is very emotional The autism-vaccine debate is one of the most emotional debates in American society right now. You find evangelists on both sides of the matter. A few months ago, I lost a key employee because his wife was convinced vaccines had caused their child’s autism. Mississippi is one of a few states that do not allow parents to opt out of vaccines and still remain in public schools. So they moved to Texas. Letters To The Editor Thank you: Thank you so much, What can I do?: What can I do to improve the looks of our county and community? I can simply ride by in disgust when I see it on the side of the road and complain that the county doesn’t do anything toward picking it up, complain that the solid waste workers don’t care if garbage spills out of the trash can or the truck going down the highway, complain that my neighbor throws his beer cans and McDonald’s sacks out before he gets home instead of throwing them in his trash can. Or ... I can help organize community cleanup projects, where residents and volunteers work together picking up litter and trash along roadsides and ditches. I can use trash bags and place garbage ties on them when full. I know that the solid waste workers don’t have the time to pick up every little piece that the wind catches when the cart is dumped, especially the nightmare of packing peanuts. If I’ll show the courtesy of bagging my garbage, I’ll bet they will be more willing to pick up smaller pieces that may fall out of the truck. When I make the suggestion that they close the lid after they dump the cart, I’ll bet they will be more responsive since they know I care about how litter looks. If I will set a better example to my neighbors, maybe it will raise their awareness on litter and they will get on board with keeping our community clean. I live on a long driveway and it’s just too far to roll the cart back and forth so I will build a small picket fenced area near the road to hide my container and keep animals out of it. I can simply move the cart to the street on pickup day and roll it back after they have made the collection. So when I am asked “What can I do?” I’ll reply, “there’s a lot all of us can do, and getting started is like being halfway there!” Ronnie Caldwell Hometown Heroes Please take time to remember our local “heroes” who are serving in war zones around the world.
