Cards start 2-1
By BARRY BURLESON
The Potts Camp Cardinals, under new head coach Justin Weeden, are off to a 2-1 start on the baseball diamond.
The Cardinals opened with a loss to Wheeler and then beat both Pine Grove and Houlka. All three games were played on the road.
Potts Camp dropped an 11-2 decision at Wheeler March 2.
Cody Watts was the only player with multiple hits. He was three for four.
Watts also took the pitching loss.
The Cardinals rebounded Friday with an 8-5 win at Pine Grove.
Austin Goode was the winning pitcher. He tossed a complete game with 11 strikeouts.
“Austin pitched an incredible game,” Coach Weeden said. “He showed a lot of heart and determination.”
From the batter’s box, Jesse Shaw had multiple hits, while Tyler Mayer and Josh Hailey each connected for three-run homers.
The hot bats continued Saturday at Houlka as Potts Camp rolled to a 17-7 victory.
Getting multiple hits were Watts, Shaw (a double and a home run – four RBIs), Kody Joyner (three for four with two doubles), Hailey and Sawyer Goode.
Watts was the winning pitcher. He tossed a complete game with five strikeouts.
“The boys really hit the ball well Saturday,” Weeden said. “Cody (Watts) pitched a great game for us.
“We’ve still got some improvements to make in the field, but it was a good win for us.”
The Cardinals were scheduled to face Marshall County rival Byhalia earlier this week. They visit East Union Saturday at 12 noon.
