A
car/school bus crash Tuesday morning on Highway 7 North injured five
and killed one, all of those being occupants in the automobile. The
accident happened at 7:43 a.m. at the Holly Springs city limits near
the entrance to the Tara Oaks Subdivision. Rescue personnel were on the
scene at 7:45 a.m, according to fire chief Kenny Holbrook. He
said apparently the car, which was traveling south, hit a patch of ice
and went out of control and hit the Holly Springs School District bus,
which was northbound. Full Story
Suspects held in robbery/assault By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Marshall
County Sheriff’s Department investigators arrested and charged two
people with aggravated assault and armed robbery in connection with the
December 30, 2009, robbery of a Cayce Road resident, according to
sheriff Kenny Dickerson. He said the incident
took place around 11 p.m. on a dark, rainy night and shortly after the
victim had returned home to his residence at 550 Cayce Road. Full Story
County board talks hauling By SUE WATSON Staff Writer In
an effort to recover costs of road damages caused by timber cutters and
haulers, the board of supervisors discussed one location in District 3
where about 200 loads of timber could be harvested this winter. The
problem is twofold for lots of tree farmers explained Eddie Pou,
retired county forester and now consultant with the tree

Smith new Main Street leader By BARRY BURLESON Editor Judy
Smith, retired superintendent of the Holly Springs School District, has
been named interim executive director of the local Main Street
organization. The Holly Springs Main Street Board
of Directors made the appointment last week for a term of one year with
an evaluation and review after six months. Smith,
who retired in 2005, will work out of an office on the Rust College
campus. Holly Springs Main Street, in its infant stages, is strapped
financially and one of Smith’s main responsibilities will be to build
the organization’s membership and financial base. Full Story
Tax services available at Byhalia substation By SUE WATSON Staff Writer This is the time of year when folks are thinking about paying their 2009 property taxes. Property
owners living in the northwestern portion of the county - Barton,
Byhalia, Warsaw, Watson, Cayce Road and Highway 309 - can conveniently
pay their property taxes at the Byhalia substation, where they can also
come in and file homestead exemption applications starting this week. Full Story
Nunnelee addresses Rotary Club By SUE WATSON Staff Writer State
Senator Alan Nunnelee was guest speaker recently at the Holly Springs
Rotary Club luncheon, a warm-up for his 2010 run for the seat of
District 1 U.S. Representative, now held by Democrat Travis Childers. Nunnelee’s
talk centered around his humble beginnings as a candidate for the state
Legislature. The Republican state senator has held his current seat
since 1994 when he replaced Roger Wicker, now a U.S. senator. Full Story
Art winner • Wilkerson takes first in PBS card contest By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
town of Byhalia and Byhalia Elementary School have been made proud with
fifth grader Andrew Wilkerson tying for first place in the Public
Broadcasting Corporation’s 2009 Holiday Card Contest. Wilkerson, 12, tied for first place and won a $100 gift basket, an iPod Nano, and a framed print of his card, “Singing Dog.” Full Story
