Second in state • Lady Patriots lose by three to Leake By BARRY BURLESON Editor It
was a heavyweight clash Saturday for the Class AA state championship.
Unfortunately for Marshall Academy, Leake scored the knockout punch. The
Lady Rebels’ Jessie Powers hit a three from the corner with 25 seconds
left. And the Lady Patriots’ last-ditch try to send the game to
overtime was unsuccessful. MA lost the gut-wrenching contest, 39-36,
and walked away with the runner-up trophy in the tournament played at
Brookhaven Academy. Full Story
• Rodgers breaks school scoring mark By BARRY BURLESON Editor Traci Rodgers’ basket with 1:22 left Saturday tied the game at 36 and put her name in the Marshall Academy record book. The
putback under the goal in the Class AA state championship contest gave
her 2,575 career points, surpassing Megan Teel’s 2,573. “It really hasn’t hit me yet and probably won’t until after the season,” said Rodgers, a senior. The
Lady Patriots, who lost 39-36 to Leake Academy and finished second in
the state, advance to the Mississippi Private School Association
Overall Tournament this week at Mississippi College. Rodgers will also
play in the MPSA all-star game. Full Story
Lady Lions second in north By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The
H.W. Byers Lady Lions hosted the Lady Eagles of West Bolivar at the
Lions’ Den on Monday night, Feb. 16, to open the play in the North Half
of Class 2A. Ciara Seldon opened with a trey via
a breakaway steal from Amanda Jones and an assist from Rachel Jones.
Seldon went to the same corner twice more and stuck her third trey.
Coach Jason Thompson ran in four reserves and the scoring continued. It
appeared as if the Lady Lions couldn’t miss even if they had been
blindfolded. This accounted for the lopsided score of 32-4 at the end
of the first quarter. Full Story
