Indians shock Tunica By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor Coach Michael Neal would be the first to tell you that it wasn’t a cakewalk, but his Indians pulled it off. They went unbeaten in the Region 3-3A Tournament at Tunica to claim the coveted crown. They
opened Monday night of last week with a 73-53 win over Lewisburg and
then a squeaker win, 36-35, over county rival Holly High in the semis.

Lady Pats fell behind 15-1 after one quarter in the Class AA North
State championship game Saturday afternoon at Canton but played even

trailed Leake throughout, getting as close as one with 3:57 to go in

Byhalia Lady Indians drew North Panola in the third game of the opening
round on Monday, February 9, at Rosa Fort. The Lady Cougars were the

Cardinals stay alive By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Potts Camp Cardinals lived to play another day when the Region 3-1A Tournament was said and done. The
Cards routed West Union in round one to secure a North Half berth and
then lost to Hickory Flat and Myrtle. They entered the next round of
the postseason Tuesday, traveling to Wheeler. Potts Camp (16-15) was a
fourth seed and Wheeler a one seed from its district. Full Story
Hawks third in district, go to Ripley By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The scoring was slow at the start but picked up after Independence Wildcat Kyle Blount planted a trey. But
the Holly Springs Hawks answered with a pair from their own three-ball
specialist Timothy Oliver. Holly High had the early lead in round one
of the Region 3-3A Tournament at 14-9. They stepped up the tempo and
increased the margin by 12 at intermission with a tally of 34-22. Full Story
Lady Hawks fourth, advance By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor Holly
High’s Lady Hawks opened play in the Region 3-3A Tournament at Rosa
Fort on Monday afternoon of last week against the Lady Wildcats of
Independence. They got some immediate leadership
from two of their senior players. Katia Isom and JaShanta Walker showed
their mettle and helped to build an 11-8 lead in the first. Holly High
gave up the second quarter by a single digit to the Lady Wildcats but
that was the only frame which they conceded. They still had the upper
hand by two at 24-22 at intermission. Full Story
Lions win district opener, lose to Belmont, Baldwyn By BARRY BURLESON Editor The
H.W. Byers boys came up just short in the consolation game of the
Region 1-2A Tournament Friday but moved on in the playoffs as the
district’s number four team. The Lions gave
Baldwyn fits before losing a 55-54 nailbiter. The Bearcats, Region
1-2A’s top squad in the regular season, was upset by New Site in the

Lady Cards finish 15-12 By BARRY BURLESON Editor The season ended for the Potts Camp girls in round one of the Region 3-1A Tournament. Seeded fourth, the Lady Cardinals lost to fifth-seeded West Union 48-45 and ended the season with a 15-12 record. Potts
Camp led 20-12 at the half and 37-27 following three quarters. But West
Union went on a 21-8 run in the fourth to take the victory. Queen Dean and Lamonica Ingram were Potts Camp’s top point producers with 12 and 11, respectively.
Baseball registration in progress The Holly
Springs Parks and Recreation Department is holding registration for
youth baseball, softball, T-ball and coach-pitch for boys and girls
ages 3-14. Registration begins February 11 and continues until March 13. Parents may register their children at Holly Springs City Hall Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There is a $20 registration fee. For more information, call 662-252-4807.

Marshall baseball team opens season Feb. 23 versus MHEA The
2009 Marshall Academy baseball season will get underway Monday, Feb.
23, as the Patriots open against Memphis Home School. Game time is set
for 4 p.m. Expectations are high for first year
Patriot coach Johnny Ray as he takes over a team that went 22-8 a year
ago and was conference and north half champions and state AA

BSA holding registration Saturday Byhalia
Sports Association’s first registration for spring and summer T-ball,
baseball, and softball was a great success with many excited boys and
girls taking advantage of this opportunity to play ball. BSA
has teams for girls ages 3-16 and boys ages 3-15. BSA plays
recreational baseball and softball and the league is sanctioned through
Dizzy Dean and is open to all children of the area. One
additional sign-up will be held Saturday, Feb. 21, from 1 p.m. to 5
p.m. at Byhalia Town Hall. Registration fee is $65, which includes full
