| Marshall baseball team opens season Feb. 23 versus MHEA The
2009 Marshall Academy baseball season will get underway Monday, Feb.
23, as the Patriots open against Memphis Home School. Game time is set
for 4 p.m. Expectations are high for first year
Patriot coach Johnny Ray as he takes over a team that went 22-8 a year
ago and was conference and north half champions and state AA
runners-up. “We have been working extremely
hard in preparation for this opening contest,” he said. “The returning
players know how close they were to winning state last year and want to
get back for another shot.” Marshall returns all-conference performers Chris Gardner, Hunter Bolden, Tyler Childers, Caleb Byrd and Jake Omedeo. Gardner,
a senior, was 11-2 on the mound last season. Childers, a junior
shortstop, was selected as the District 1-AA most valuable player. Other
players who played significant roles on last year’s team are sophomores
Joey Omedeo and Joey Brock, along with Will Patton, who is a junior.
Newcomers who should make an immediate impact are junior Parker James,
sophomore Josh Vanderburg and freshman Elgin Lafever. James,
who transferred from Center Hill High School, should start in the
outfield and will also see plenty of time on the mound. Vanderburg
will handle the bulk of the catching duties after coming to Marshall
from Desoto Central High School. Lafever, a first year high school
player, will see plenty of action in the outfield when Bolden, Joey
Brock and James are on the mound. After Monday’s
single game with the home school, Marvell will come to town on
Wednesday, Feb. 25, for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. Thursday,
Feb. 26, the junior varsity will play against Lewisburg at 3:30 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 28, the Patriots travel to Northwest Community College
for games against North Delta and Tunica Institute. Also
in action this week is the junior high team, which is hosting Oxford
Thursday, Feb. 19, at Patriot Field starting at 5 p.m..
