MA teams take district crowns • North State this week By BARRY BURLESON Editor The
Marshall Academy Lady Patriots and Patriots hoisted District 1-AA
championship trophies to the cheers of the home fans Saturday. The
MA girls beat Indianola by eight points, while the boys rolled over Lee
(Clarksdale) by 18. Their season marks improved to 29-7 and 21-12,

Arkansas, a Division 1-AA school, while Richmond is headed to Northeast
Community College. Malone was joined by his mother, Cynthia (standing,
right). Richmond was joined by his mother, Debra, and his
sister-in-law, Keshia Pigues. “These are two really good athletes, and
I look for them to be successful at the next level,” Coach Washington

Lady Lions, Lions turn back Mantachie in region By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The
H.W. Byers Lady Lions stampeded the Mantachie Lady Mustangs in
clock-busting fashion in their next-to-last game of the regular season. Byers
had struck for nine points before Mantachie found the bottom of the
nets. Coach Jason Thompson subbed the entire team and the Lady Mustangs
were able to pull even at the quarter’s end at 13-13. Full Story
Holly High teams down rival Byhalia By CLAUDE VINSON Sports Editor The fortunes of this season’s battles have not been too kind to the Holly High Lady Hawks or the Byhalia Lady Indians. Neither
was breaking even on overall or regional records. The former was 11-15
overall and the latter was 9-15. But those stats could be moot in a

Free throw competition Saturday All boys and
girls ages 10 to 14 are invited to participate in the local level of
competition for 2009 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship. The local competition will be held Saturday, Feb. 15, at 11 a.m. at Holy Family School Gym on West Street. Full Story
Indians earn third seed By BARRY BURLESON Editor The
Byhalia Indians secured the third seed in this week’s Region 3-3A
Tournament with a four-point win over Senatobia on Tuesday, Feb. 3. Coach
Michael Neal said his team got off to a slow start but rallied in the
second half for the 51-47 win. The Indians trailed 13-5 after one
quarter, 22-16 at the half and 34-32 following three periods. Full Story
Holly Springs sweeps Lewisburg Wins over Lewisburg last week came easy for Holly Springs High School teams. The Lady Hawks won by 42 points (69-27) and the Hawks by 46 (82-36). Full Story
Potts Camp takes two from Lewisburg By BARRY BURLESON Editor Potts Camp teams wrapped up the regular season with home wins Friday. The Lady Cardinals opened “Senior Night” by knocking off Lewisburg 54-41. Full Story

Simone Ryan, former H.W. Byers High School Lady Lion is currently
playing for the Lady Bulldogs of Cumberland
University in Lebanon, Tenn. On Thursday, January 29, Cumberland
visited Blue Mountain College. The current Byers team was invited by Blue Mountain head coach Lavon Driskell to attend
the game. Several players and other supporters of the Lady Lions also attended. Ciara Seldon, one of the seniors on
the current Lady Lions team stated, “It’s great to
actually see one of us play at the next level. After seeing Simone, I
know the rest of us can also play in college.” She and
Simone were teammates for four years and were both members of the 2008
Class 2A State Championship team. |

Light goose conservation order in effect until March 31 Waterfowl
hunters are reminded that even though the regular waterfowl season
ended on January 25, ample hunting opportunity for light geese remains.
The light goose conservation order is a special hunting season
developed to help control expanding populations of snow, blue, and Ross
