 | Assist at State Capitol
Shatondria
Abram of Holly Springs, Paige Thompson of Ashland and Emma Burleson,
also of Holly Springs, recently served as pages for the Mississippi
Senate. Pages generally run errands for officials and Senate staff.
Shatondria (left), Paige and Emma are pictured with Senator Bill Stone,
who sponsored their visits, and Lt. Governor Phil Bryant. Shatondria is
the daughter of Joyce Abram and attends Ashland High School. When asked
about the week, Shatondria said, “I am truly honored to have been
selected as a page, and it has been a once-in-a-lifetime
experience. I met new people and different senators who all
became good friends. I am so thankful, so ‘Thank You!’” Paige is the
daughter of Keith and Betty Thompson and attends Walnut High School.
When asked about the week, Paige said, “Being a page was an exciting
experience, and I had the chance to meet a lot of wonderful people. It
was an honor to work for Bill Stone, to be able to go to Jackson, and
see close up how the Capitol works. It was great , and I am very
appreciative.” Emma is the daughter of Barry and Pam Burleson and
attends Marshall Academy. When asked about the week, Emma said, “It was
an honor to be selected as a page by Senator Bill Stone. I had an
amazing experience in Jackson. I learned about our government and made
several new friends.” |
Native of Holly Springs named teacher of year in Hancock County
| | Helene Doxey with her students at South Hancock Elementary |
Helene
Doxey has been named Hancock County School District Teacher of the
Year. Doxey has been an educator in the district for 27 years and has
taught third grade her entire career. She currently teaches at South
Hancock Elementary. Doxey received her BAE and MAE from the University
of Mississippi. She mentors other teachers and shares her experience.
Her philosophy about education is very simple. Children need to be
treated with love and respect. Ms. Doxey’s favorite education quote is
“If you hold their hearts – you’ve got their minds.” Doxey definitely
holds the hearts of the many who have been in her classroom. Doxey is
involved in community activities across Hancock County. Pictured above:
Doxey, Hancock County School District Teacher of the Year and her third
grade class outside South Hancock Elementary. Doxey grew up in Holly
Springs and lived at 150 Randolph Street. She is the daughter of Wall
Doxey Jr. and Mozelle McIntosh. Elton McIntosh was her stepfather. She
is the grandaughter of U.S. Senator Wall Doxey, whom the park is named
for. Ralph Doxey is her brother. Hallie Chatham is her great aunt. Both
currently live in Holly Springs. she graduated from Marshall Academy in
1977 and still comes “home” often to visit family and friends.
Mock Trial Team represents MA well By KATHERINE FARESE Marshall Academy student On
Jan. 24, Marshall Academy’s first-ever Mock Trial Team traveled to
Oxford to compete in the regional competition sponsored by the
Mississippi Bar Association. The competition
featured schools, both public and private, ranging from areas all over
North Mississippi, including Oxford High School, Lafayette High School,
North Delta Academy, Mississippi School for Math and Science and
numerous others. The preparation for the occasion
took a great deal of time, hard work and effort from participating
students. Each student “attorney” had to memorize questions for each
of the six witnesses in the fictional case, deliver effective opening
statements and closing arguments to a panel of three judges, memorize
applicable objections, know the witness statements to impeach witnesses
if declination occurs and be prepared to respond appropriately to
whatever the judges may ask. Full Story |
