Lions, Lady Lions beat Independence
The H.W. Byers boys basketball team earned its first win of the young season Tuesday of last week at home.
Coach Jason Thompson’s Lions, playing on the home court, knocked off Independence 56-48.
Byers surged ahead 14-7 after one quarter and led 30-23 at the half and 38-30 after three periods.
Shantez Hearn led the Lions. He scored 19 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Also in double digits was A.J. Mabon with 10.
Byers improved to 1-6.
The Lady Lions trailed Independence early but rallied for an 84-68 win.
Byers fell behind 19-18 after one quarter but outscored the Lady Wildcats 19-9 in the second quarter and 19-13 in the third to take control of the game.
A balanced offensive attack spearheaded the victory. Scoring in double digits were Kourtney Coleman with 20 points, Kyra Gulledge with 19, Alexis Hardaway with 15 and Brionne Gulledge with 14. Kyra Gulledge also had 12 rebounds and five blocked shots.
Coach Thompson’s Lady Lions improved to 8-2 on the season.
