Fall session of
court takes pleas

Marshall
County Circuit Court finished its fall session in November with a
number of defendants pleading guilty to felony charges and the
completion of two jury trials, according to circuit clerk Lucy
Carpenter.

Board hashes utility issues By SUE WATSON Staff Writer While
the city of Holly Springs awaits the hiring of a new general manager
for the utility department, the mayor and board are grappling with
getting the department ready for the new manager. Mayor
Andre’ DeBerry said he wants an energy audit of the utilities
(electricity, gas, water and sewer) to see if there is loss of product
that is costing the utility, and ultimately the city, before the new

County OKs permits to extend gas lines By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Some
residents bypassed by the natural gas service lines on Higdon Road and
along Old Highway 4 will be put in service by the city of Holly Springs. The
areas were missed when the original project was initiated due to a
shortfall of funds, according to Don Hollingsworth, public works

The
man whose name has become synonymous with Christmas was chosen as
Leader of the Year by the Byhalia Area Chamber of Commerce. Ronnie
Luther, who over a decade ago, with his wife Brenda, founded the
Clydesdale Christmas Store so children in north Mississippi wouldn’t be
left out during the holiday gift giving, was recognized by the chamber
for his involvement, service and leadership that “contributes to a
better society,” the chamber wrote. Full Story
Parade Saturday; Swords, Poteet grand marshals By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Frank
Swords and George Poteet will jointly serve as grand marshals for the
Holly Springs Christmas Parade this Saturday at 5 p.m. downtown. Swords
and Poteet are business partners who built NSA, a water and air
filtration manufacturing and distribution business. They were
schoolmates at Itawamba Junior College and from humble beginnings
before making their mark in the corporate world. Full Story
Team bus burglarized The Mississippi College
women’s basketball team bus was burglarized while unattended on the
Rust College campus November 24, according to chief Robert Pearson. The Lady Choctaws were in town to play the Lady Bearcats. Full Story
Marshall woman indicted on false pretense charge Sweetie
B. Wooten, 38, of 1710 Marianna Road, Holly Springs, was indicted
November 19 by a DeSoto County Grand Jury on a charge of false
pretense, according to attorney general Jim Hood. Wooten was charged
with intending to cheat or defraud a victim by telling him that she
could get him out of a criminal charge if he paid her $10,000. Full Story
Police respond to 23 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded to 23 calls for the week ending November 23. Chief
Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 3; motor
vehicle accidents, 1; disturbances, 2; escorts, 2; animal-related
calls, 2; medical assistance, 2; fires, 1; miscellaneous calls, 10.
Byhalia police officers also made seven arrests during the period.
