OpinionFielder’s Choice Sorry, Mom; I messed up The cell phone call Friday said “Mother.” It had been a while since we’d talked. I figured she was just calling to say “hello” and wanting to catch up on the children and their activities and all. Close to Nowhere War is hell Between Veterans Day and the horrible massacre at Ft. Hood, I’m feeling even more sentimental and patriotic than usual. A “soldier” came in the newspaper office last Friday afternoon and got a subscription -- he’s headed off to Iraq. He said he knew several other “hometown heroes” and would try to get some pictures with them to send to us for the paper. When he left, I said “be careful” and that I’d put him on the prayer list at my church. And I nearly cried. The Preacher’s Corner “No one of us is whole in himself...” “Who do you go to church for?” or to be more grammatically correct, “For whom do you go to church?” I ask this question both whimsically and seriously, and without being judgmental, for I think that many of us “bring people with us,” physically, and more especially, spiritually, when we go to the house of God. Report from U.S. Senate November is time to honor service to our country Veterans across the country were honored last week for their service to America. Each year on November 11, we rightfully recognize those who have served and borne the cost of our defense of freedom. This Veterans Day was particularly solemn, as our nation mourned the loss of 13 of our finest following the recent tragedy at Fort Hood in Texas. This terrible loss was yet another reminder of how much we owe our men and women in uniform. Letters To The Editor National Guard party: On December 12 at the Holly Springs VFW, the Clydesdale Christmas Store is sponsoring a Christmas party for the immediate families of the National Guard troops who are deployed overseas. We contacted families from the Holly Springs Unit through the Women’s Support Group but found out we have several soldiers deployed from Holly Springs who are in other units and they were not contacted. We would like to invite those families from Holly Springs. Families need to RSVP by Dec. 1. The party will start at 11:30 a.m. I need the following information: name of person(s) who will be attending; the soldier’s name and rank who is deployed. If any children are living at home, I need the name, age and gender of each child and two gift ideas we can get for the kids (Santa will give out the gifts). Email this information to me at Ronnie.luther@yahoo. com or call Brenda Luther at 662-252-3494. Help us help our soldiers’ families have a happy Christmas! Brenda Luther Enjoyed open house: My wife and I moved from Southaven back to Holly Springs early this year. We both have enjoyed the move. This past week we had a very pleasant evening walking around and participating in the Holiday Open Houses with some of the businesses on or near the square. The people who work at the stores and who shopped were very nice and friendly. Hats off to who organized this. The only thing I would like to see different would be some lights on the square. It was very dark walking between Marshall County Music on S. Center Street to JB’s on the Square. Glad to be back home! Thanks for support: Thank you so much for your donations for the first annual Fun Day in Potts Camp. The following gave money, food, material, etc.: DJM Video, Roger and Daphne Foster, Flick’s Amoco Restaurant, T’s Wings, Spiders One-Stop, Southern Diesel Repair, Potts Camp Bank, Corner Quick Stop, the Marshall County Board of Supervisors, Michael Green - Jumping Bean, Edward Gurley, Chuck Thomas, Kenny Dickerson, Larry Hall, S&M Package Store, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Rose, and many, many more. We would also like to thank all the volunteers who helped. Town of Potts Camp Hometown Heroes Please take time to remember our local “heroes” who are serving in war zones around the world.
