OpinionFielder’s Choice Building friendships College, first and foremost, is about getting a quality education and selecting a career that you will enjoy and hopefully make you some money. I chose journalism – and I’m not getting rich by any means but loving it about 90 percent of the time. The past week has been unusually tough but the ups and the downs go with the territory. Close to Nowhere Confessions of a lead foot My confession this week is that I have a serious lead foot. Not long after we moved to Mississippi, I discovered that Hwy. 7, between Holly Springs and Oxford, is not the place to speed! The Preacher’s Corner Power going off sends Gracie into a flutter Saturday morning about 6 a.m. the power went off at my house. I was just beginning to wake up, and for some reason, the slight, almost imperceptible sounds of the electricity shutting down made me quickly awake. There was no particular reason — the little motor in the refrigerator out in the kitchen, perhaps the cessation of the whoosh from the central heat. The house was chilly, so I just lay in bed for awhile. Report from the U.S. House Congressman Honoring those who have served our country This week, on Veterans Day, we honor those who have admirably served our country. Mississippi’s First Congressional District is home to approximately 7,500 veterans currently receiving benefits from the Veterans Administration, as well as over 4,000 retired veterans. Mississippi’s men and women of the armed services make great sacrifices to protect the fundamental freedoms upon which our nation was founded, and we must ensure that they receive the care and benefits they have earned upon their return home. Letter To The Editor Many thanks: Many thanks to our director, Delia Reid, for sponsoring the bingo game at the Victoria congregate meal and activity program on Friday, Nov. 6.
