| Close to Nowhere By Linda Jones It’s beginning to look a lot... I have been asked (repeatedly, I might add) not to mention the fact that it will be Christmas in 56 days. My
oldest granddaughter is fussing at me because I have Josh Groban’s
Christmas CD playing in my car and as soon as I can find the rest of my
Christmas CDs, they’ll be playing also! First,
though, we have to have Halloween. Meredith and her friend Grace are
going to be “undead,” in Haunted (Harmon)town at the Northwest Side
Civic Center -- right off Hwy. 310, about eight or so miles from Hwy. 7
South, Sat., Oct. 31, beginning, I think, at 6 or 7 p.m. It’s
always a great haunted house! The civic club is made up mostly of
members of the surrounding churches, and Becky Spencer from Free
Springs UMC is a ringleader! And she’s spectacular, even if she is my
good friend! Remy isn’t actually participating,
she’s not much of a “crowd” person. However, she’ll be drifting around
the edges in her mother’s old vampire cloak and a really tangled long,
blonde wig. I might add that I told her not to take it out of the
package before Halloween. I guess my favorite
holiday though would have to be Thanksgiving. I cook and sweat and
slave and go bonkers for days. By the time I sit down at the table with
all my family and often friends, I am too tired to eat. There’s
just not much better than sacking out on the couch with all my family
sacked out around me and taking a nap after dinner! We
often say we’re going to take a walk after Thanksgiving dinner, but, to
the best of my recollection, we never have. At least we do talk about
it, though. I often try to think of a “new” dish to try out on Thanksgiving Day. Heaven help me, if I succeed! We
have to have candied (or fried, depending on what you want to call
them) sweet potatoes, green bean casserole to make my youngest brother
totally happy, rolls, which I always burn, potato salad, deviled eggs
for Remy and Dennis, canned cranberry sauce or Meredith would die,
cornbread (with ‘light’ bread) dressing with giblet gravy and also
turkey gravy that Pop made the recipe up for years ago and naturally,
turkey. I cannot deviate from this menu without severe repercussions! One
thing I never do is go Christmas shopping the day after Thanksgiving. I
like to hang around the house with all my visiting family and eat
turkey sandwiches and nap. It’s a tradition that I love! • According to my “countdown to Christmas” website — Thursday, Oct. 29 is 56 days ’til Christmas!
