Holly High turns back JV Lions in intracounty football clash
By BARRY BURLESON
Holly Springs and H.W. Byers have been longtime rivals on the basketball court. Now they’re taking that competition to the football field.
On Tuesday of last week, the Class 3A Hawks defeated the Class 1A Lions 20-12 in junior varsity action on Byers’ new field. Football is back at the Mt. Pleasant school after a 30-plus-year absence.
Holly High’s touchdowns came on a 20-yard pass from Peter Thigpen to Deckie Johnson, a 4-yard run by Shaquille Faulkner and a 40-yard run by Keldrick Johnson.
The Hawks were one of three on two-point tries, with Deckie Johnson catching a toss from Thigpen.
For the Lions, Chris Echols scored on a quarterback sneak from 1 yard out and Ladarrius Jones caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Echols.
Byers was unsuccessful on both their tries for two-point conversions.
The Lions will host Potts Camp Thursday, Oct. 1, in JV action. The Cardinals are playing their first year of football.
