Parents reminded of school attendance law
As the new school year begins, the Mississippi Department of Education, Office of Compulsory School Attendance Enforcement, reminds area parents about the law governing school attendance.
Under the Mississippi Compulsory School Attendance Law, parents and guardians are required to enroll their children in a public, private or home school. This law applies to children who have reached the age of 5 and have not exceeded the age of 17 by September 1.
Children who have reached or will reach the age of 5 on or before September 1 and have enrolled in a full-day public kindergarten will be under the Compulsory School Attendance Law.
Parents interested in teaching their children at home (home school) are required to complete a certificate of enrollment card.
Any parent or guardian who fails to comply with the Compulsory School Attendance Law may be punished in a court of law.
For more information, call school attendance officer Kinmaaria Carter at 662-252-5311.
Byhalia residents plan to establish arts council
Residents in the town of Byhalia are working to establish an arts council.
The nonprofit organization’s purpose would be to enrich the lives of residents of Byhalia and the surrounding areas of Marshall County through increased awareness and participation in the arts. The group is working to form a board of directors which will include a diversity of ages and talents.
Byhalia Mayor Phil Malone and the board of aldermen support the council as a service organization that will promote community unity.
More specific goals and plans will be formed after the first meeting of the board of directors of the council.
