| Three charged in home invasion By SUE WATSON
Two adults and one juvenile were arrested and charged with aggravated assault and burglary in connection with a home invasion over the weekend, according to sheriff Kenny Dickerson. The suspects forced their way into the home of an 82-year-old woman living alone on Wall Hill Road Friday, August 21 around 5 p.m., he said. While inside the residence, the suspects struck the victim in the eye with a rifle and robbed her of her billfold and an undetermined amount of cash, according to Dickerson. The subjects also took a 19-inch flat screen television, a camcorder, a .22 rifle and two pellet rifles, a small suitcase full of jewelry and a pair of binoculars from the residence. ‘Outdoors lover’s paradise’ Visit one of Mississippi’s finest nature areas on September 11-13 and see hundreds of ruby-throated hummingbirds as they migrate from Canada through Mississippi to their winter home in Mexico and Central America. Byhalia considers park land proposal By SUE WATSON The board of aldermen and mayor of the town of Byhalia were presented with an alternate proposal for land for a park at last week’s meeting. Debbie House and Kathy Worthy offered to sell the city about 150 acres of property which they said would be better land for a park than the 160 acres the town bought on Stonewall Road. Supervisors asked to support e-WIN By SUE WATSON Betty Yates and Edward Moses, representing the newly formed e-WIN center in Holly Springs, appeared before the board of supervisors last week with a budget request of over $100,000. Yates said the center needs an office space and operating money. Moses said unemployment is high in the area and the center will help deliver jobs.
Holly Springs officers make three arrests Three people were arrested by officers with the Holly Springs Police Department last week, according chief Robert Pearson. Health alert: H1N1 flu reported Brame and Wright Medical Group in Holly Springs has reported the first confirmed novel H1N1 flu virus infection (formerly known as swine flu) in Marshall County. As most are aware, the novel H1N1 flu has been widespread through most parts of Mississippi this summer, but until August 24, there were no confirmed cases in Marshall County. • Byhalia Chamber of Commerce luncheon By SUE WATSON Northeast Mississippi Health Care Inc. sponsored the Byhalia Chamber of Commerce’s quarterly luncheon August 13 at The Flame (Byhalia United Methodist Church). That guaranteed a large crowd of employees from the Byhalia and Mt. Pleasant family health care centers and a look backward provided by executive director Marjorie McKinney. Museum will reopen soon By SUE WATSON The Marshall County Historical Museum is a beautiful place to visit now that the structure, formerly the Presbyterian Synodical College for Women, has been stabilized, restored, and a new elevator installed. Curator Lois Swaney-Shipp thanked the Marshall County Board of Supervisors for the great restoration work recently completed with a grant from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History. Byhalia police respond to 26 calls The Byhalia Police Department responded 26 calls during the past week. Chief Gary Looney released the following report – alarm calls, 5; motor vehicle accidents, 1; disturbances, 1; escorts, 2; animal-related calls, 2; assists, 1; medical assistance, 4; miscellaneous, 10. Byhalia police officers also made four arrests during the past week. |
