Marshall
County School District Superintendent Don Randolph tried to set the
record straight about increases in the fiscal year 2009-10 budget
before the board of supervisors. In prefacing
remarks, he thanked supervisors for what they have done to support the
school district and help make the schools successful. He also invited
them to visit the schools. He said he was alarmed
about the statements supervisors made recently at a board meeting that
were published in the newspaper. He said he wanted to share with them
and the public how the schools operate. Full Story

Woman faces extortion charge A Marshall County woman has been arrested for extortion, announced Attorney General Jim Hood. Sweetie
B. Wooten, age 38, of 1710 Marianna Road, Holly Springs, was arrested
August 12 by investigators with the Public Integrity Division of the
Attorney General’s Office and charged with one count of extortion.
Wooten was booked into the DeSoto County Jail, where her bond was set
at $5,000. No court dates have yet been set in the case. Full Story
Aldermen push for better recreation programs By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
Holly Springs Board of Aldermen recently inquired about the quality of
recreation programs in the city, with the discussion led by
alderman-at-large Johnnie Bagley. She asked parks and recreation director Ken McMullen whether his department has made consistent efforts to find program funds. Full Story

this week on the new West Boundary Extended in Holly Springs. About
half of the work is completed. Afterwards, the street will be paved for

Tree farmers group submits permit plan By SUE WATSON Staff Writer The
leaders of the Marshall County Forestry Association have proffered some
rules they believe will help the timber industry get trees out of the
field and at the same time preserve county roads. Buck
Hobbs, George Murphree and Art Waymire, local tree farmers, went over a
proposed permit agreement to be used for hauling timber out of the
fields in Marshall County. Timber is the largest agricultural product
in the county with an estimated $400 million in product standing, they

First United Methodist welcomes new minister By SUE WATSON Staff Writer Milton
and Cindy Whatley are the new ministerial family at First United
Methodist Church in Holly Springs. They took their new charge in late
June and are getting settled in at the parsonage and meeting the
