| Report from the U.S. House Congressman Travis Childers Nominations for service academies Each
year, I have the privilege of nominating young men and women from
Mississippi’s First Congressional District for admission to the U.S.
Military Academy at West Point, the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis,
the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, and the U.S. Merchant
Marine Academy at King’s Point. If you, a
friend, or a family member would be interested in seeking a nomination
from my office to one of these academies, the candidate him- or herself
should contact my Tupelo office at 662-841-8808 to request an
application, or download an application from my web site. Additionally,
the candidate will need to apply directly to the Academy’s admissions
office. The U.S. Coast Guard Academy manages
its own selection process based on a nationwide merit-based competitive
process. No congressional nominations are required. All
applicants should apply directly to the Coast Guard Academy’s
Admissions office. For more information, you can visit their Web site
http://www.cga.edu. In order to apply to a
service academy, candidates must be at least 17, but not yet 23 years
of age by July 1 of the year of admission to the academy. Applicants
must also be U.S. citizens, be unmarried, be legal residents of
Mississippi’s First Congressional District, and must meet the medical,
physical, and academic requirements of the academy. Candidates cannot
be pregnant or have legal obligation to support a child or other
dependents. Each member of Congress is allowed a total of five appointees in each service academy. For
each vacancy, I am allowed to nominate ten individuals. If a candidate
contacts other nominating sources, he/she should be certain to confirm
their deadlines and application requirements, as procedures may differ
between offices. Please contact our Tupelo
office to learn more about vacancies and for an application for
nomination. Completed applications need to be postmarked by November
16, 2009. Applications should be mailed to my Tupelo office at 337A
East Main Street, Tupelo, MS 38804. As always,
please continue to keep me informed about your opinions and concerns by
phone at (202) 225-4306 or by visiting my website at
www.childers.house.gov.
