| Opener Aug. 7 for Lady Pats By BARRY BURLESON Editor The Marshall Academy soccer team starts a new season soon under the guidance of a new coach. Lance
McGregor takes over for Catherine Mirante, who led the Lady Patriots
for three seasons. It’s his first time to coach soccer. He played the
sport in high school at Lafayette. McGregor said the girls have been working hard since the spring, including twice-a-week drills in the summer. “I’ve
been impressed with the girls’ work ethic,” he said. “We’ve been
through a lot of conditioning, and everybody has stuck in there. Nobody
has quit on us.” He said the team has to be in better shape than its opponents because it is only 15 members strong. “They will be on the field for longer periods of time,” McGregor said. This
will be just the fifth season for MA soccer. The Lady Patriots had
their best season ever last year – going 5-7 and earning an inaugural
state playoff berth. Gone from that team are six
graduates – Emma Burleson, Molly West, Olivia Clanton, Kim Cunningham,
Hannah Hamblin and Anna Petree. McGregor said this year’s captain will be Ali Hutchens. Co-captains are Kristin Mynatt and Sara Walker. “We
have some good leadership returning, and I’m pleased with that,” he
said. “But we will have to depend on newcomers to really help us out a
lot. We’re looking forward to getting the season started.” The
Marshall girls visited South Pontotoc last Sunday for a scrimmage game.
They will host South Pontotoc this Sunday, Aug. 2, at 2 p.m. in a
scrimmage. The season officially kicks off Friday, Aug. 7, at home versus Heritage Academy, starting at 4 p.m.
